The History of Becoming to No End

Friedrich Nietzsche

La Volonté de puissance

II

Livre III:
Le nihilisme vaincu par lui-même

3. L'innocence du Devenir
(The Innocence of Becoming)

464

There have never been any moral actions. They are impossible. In fact no morals are possible.

History is what no longer holds. For it has passed away.

And things happen without obeying moral law. This is the innocence of becoming. Nothing has purpose or end. Therefore we can never say that we are acting against the way things ought to be.

Thus it is essential that we discover the innocence of becoming by excluding ends.

From the Bianquis translation:

Principes : Il n’y a jamais eu d’actions morales.

A. 1883 (XIII, § 290) (p145, [sic])
