4.8 Essence, Possibility and Virtuality (186–8/235–7, 208–14/260–6)

 



 

Brief summary: 
For Deleuze, Ideas are actualized, but they are not essences in the conventional sense of the term. Deleuze, following Bergson, notes two ways we may understand essences. The first is the Aristotelian way of removing everything non-essential. So if we wanted to know the essence of color, we would remove each of their accidental traits. But this gives us only an abstract and empty notion of color. The other way to understand the Idea as an essence is to consider how it implicates complicatedly (that is, how it ‘perplicates’) all actualizations it can take. To make an analogy, the essence of color under this view would be like white light, since we can break white light down into every actualizable color of the spectrum and also recompose that white light by recombining all actual light colors. This notion of the Idea is tied to the distinction between the virtual, actual, and the possible. The Idea is virtual, and the instantiations in spatio-temporal reality that the Idea somehow generates are actual. The virtual is not the possible, since the possible is a deprivation of the existant and also since the possible is not “real,” while instead the virtual is real and is also not deprived. The virtual, then, has three important features. 1) The virtual is real without being actual, since “it provides the structure responsible for the genesis of the qualities we find in actual entities”. 2) The virtual is complete without being entire, because it implies all actualizable determinations and thus is lacking nothing (it is complete), but at the same time, it is infinitely rich in such implications, and thus it can never be exhausted by its actualizations (it is not entire). 3) The Idea is differentiated without being differenciated, since it is composed of differential relations (it is differentiated) whose related parts are by themselves undetermined, meaning they lack an identity to which predicates may be ascribed (it is not, then, differenciated).

 



Summary


We have been looking at how for Deleuze, Ideas find many actual instantiations. But this does not mean for him that Ideas are essences. We could only call an Idea an essence if we mean it in a different way than we normally do, namely as instead “the accident, the event, the sense” (SH 250 qtg. DR 191/241) [But I am not sure what that means yet].  SH says that this claim [that Ideas are not essences at least in the conventional sense] “is inseparable from his claim that Ideas ‘perplicate’ or interpenetrate one another (DR | 187/236)” (SH 150-151). To explain more what he means by Ideas, Deleuze makes reference to examples in Bergson’s “The Life and Work of Ravaisson,” namely that the Idea of color is like white light and the Idea of sound is like white noise. Bergson is concerned with the question of what different colors have in common. [Since what they would all have in common is something very general about color] this inquiry  is about the question of “how we are to think, philosophically, the notion of colour. In effect, we are therefore asking the question ‘what is X?’ for colour, the question Deleuze takes to be ‘the question of essences’ (DR 188/236)” (SH 151). Bergson says there are primarily two ways to answer such a question as this. 1) With an Aristotelian manner of determining essences by removing from each instance whatever is non-essential to it:

The first is the traditional answer to the question of essences provided by Aristotle. In order to determine the essence of something, we abstract from it those properties that are inessential (or accidental), to arrive at purely those properties that every individual in the class has. Thus, ‘we obtain this general idea of colour only by removing from the red that which makes it red, from the blue what makes it blue, from the green what makes it green’ (Bergson 1992: 225). If we try to answer the question ‘what is colour?’ by this means, we end up with a concept that is abstract and empty, as we have proceeded ‘by gradual extinction of the light which brought out the differences between the colours’ (Bergson 1992: 225).

2) By means of “perplication” [This one is harder to grasp, so let me quote it first.]

The alternative is what Deleuze takes up with his concept of perplication. Bergson suggests that rather than proceeding by abstraction, we proceed by [the following up to citation is Bergson quotation]

taking the thousand and one different shades of blue, violet, green, yellow and red, and passing them through a converging lens, bringing them to a single point. Then appears in all its radiance the pure white light which, perceived here below in the shades which disperse it, enclosed above, in its undivided unity, the indefinite variety of multicoloured rays. (Bergson 1992: 225)

Such an account can only be an analogy, as light is still seen in this case too much along the lines of actual phenomena, but it clarifies the interpenetrative notion of the Idea. Just as the conjunction of the two terms of the differential relation allow us to specify all of the points on a curve, the differentials of the Idea together specify all of the possible states of affairs that a given system can exhibit. Rather than achieving this by excluding what is non-essential, it does so by positively specifying the genetic conditions for each of these states. In this sense, for Deleuze, the Idea does not so much contain the essence of a state of affairs, as the grounds for the totality of possible accidents a system can | exhibit. Depending on how the elements are related to one another, different states of affairs will be generated.

[What we need to take from the example perhaps is that if we start with white light, we see that it implies the full range of color possibilities, since it can be broken down into them, and also the white light can be recomposed were all those colors of light combined. So white is the “essence” of color, in Deleuze’s sense of the Idea, since it contains ‘perplicated’ (perhaps meaning something like ‘implicated complicatedly’) within it implicitly “the totality of possible accidents” the system of color can exhibit. I wonder then if this is like what SH says about state diagrams in his Hegel-Deleuze book. This is another of the great sections in this other book.]


[The next point seems to be that Ideas as these totalities of possible accidents are not of the same nature as the accidents themselves and thus are not of the same nature as the states of affairs, which are actualizations of the accidents. Yet, recall in the example of light that the colors together imply white light and vice versa, even though they are qualitatively different sorts of things, since one has color and the other has none. Thus the genetic conditions for states of affairs, that is, the Ideas, are immanent to the states of affairs while being different in kind. I quote to be sure:]

Clearly, if an Idea is to be understood as forming a multiplicity of interpenetrating elements, then it cannot have the same nature as states of affairs. Elements in states of affairs are determined in an opposite manner to the interpenetrative structure of perplication, namely by determining their limits (what they are not). Furthermore, we can see that just as problems were immanent to their solutions, the genetic conditions for states of affairs (Ideas) are simultaneous with states of affairs themselves. Thus, for Epicurus, atoms co-existed with the sensible objects that they constituted, and for Althusser, the mode of production co-existed with the actual relations that it determined. We thus have two series that differ in kind: actual events that occur within the world, and the ideal events of ‘sections, ablations, adjunctions’ that engender them (DR 188/237).

SH will now jump [it seems by about 20-30 pages in DR] to the related topic of the Idea and possibility. For Deleuze, the Idea is virtual, and he makes three claims regarding the virtual: 1) it is real without being actual, 2) it is complete without being entire, and 3) it is differentiated without being differenciated. SH will go through these claims, all the while being sure to contrast them with the structure of possibility, since for Deleuze the virtual should never be confused with the possible (152).


1) The virtual is real without being actual. We first consider Kant’s point that there is not difference between a possible and a real object. A hundred real silver coins has the exact same value as a hundred possible ones. The only difference between them is their existential status, since the one actually exists physically and the other does not. “Now, the virtual is instead ‘Real without being actual, ideal without being abstract’ (DR 208/260)” (153). [SH then gives two reasons why this is so. The second one I grasp much better. It is that since the Idea provides the structure responsible for the genesis of actual entities’ qualities, it therefore must be real, even if it is not actual. The first idea I am not sure about. Let me just quote it since it seems to be presented as the less important idea and since I will not interpret it properly myself. Perhaps the thinking here is that actuality and possibility are different in kind, and that is already a strong enough distinction that we do not need to bring into the matter their difference in terms of reality, and then this has something to do with the issue of the virtual being real without being actual. I will quote since as you can see I got it wrong:]

Now, the virtual is instead ‘Real without being actual, ideal without being abstract’ (DR 208/260). Throughout this chapter, we have seen that Ideas are different in kind from actual states of affairs, just as differentials differ from actual numbers. In this sense, we do not need to distinguish possibility from actuality in terms of reality, as they can be distinguished by this difference in kind itself. More than this, however, the virtual is real to the extent that it provides the structure responsible for the genesis of the qualities we find in actual entities. ‘The reality of the virtual is structure’ (DR 209/260). It provides a complete account of the structure of the actual state of affairs that results from it, and is no less a real part of the object than the actual object itself.

2) It is complete without being entire. [I do not follow this one very well either. Let me quote it first.]

‘The reality of the virtual is structure’ (DR 209/260). It provides a complete account of the structure of the actual state of affairs that results from it, and is no less a real part of the object than the actual object itself. In this regard, Deleuze notes that it is ‘complete without being entire’ (DR 214/266). Deleuze’s point is that the virtual does not rely on any reference to the actual, although in fact it is always found to be associated with the object which it engenders. In this sense, it escapes from the limitation of possibility we discussed in the previous chapter. There, we saw that the concept of possibility could not give us the sense of an object, because it merely reduplicated it at a higher transcendental level of analysis. As such, a possible object is not complete, since it is dependent on the notion of a real object to which we add the concept of non-being. The completeness of the virtual is thus what allows us to understand it as giving the sense of a proposition, even though it is not whole, since ‘every object is double’ (DR 209/261).

[I do not recall off the top of my head this point about possibility from chapter 3. Perhaps it is in reference to possible states of affairs suggested by the sense of a statement, from section 3.8. There was also discussion of a problem understood in terms of the possibility of its solution in section 3.9, but that does not seem related enough as far as I can tell. I am sorry that I cannot pin this one down. At any rate, we might still be able to extract the important idea here. Perhaps the notion is the following. A possible object is not complete, since we obtain it first by taking the notion of a real object and then subtracting the notion of its actual existence. But that is not how we obtain the notion of the virtual. Rather, it is perhaps like a map of all the differential relations which can find various instantiations in actuality. So it is complete in that no differential relation that could be actualized is left out, just as every variety of color is implicated in the white light. However, perhaps also it can never be exhausted by any actualizations or by any series of them, as perhaps it is infinitely rich, and for that reason it perhaps is complete without being entire, since it can never be fully exhausted. I am guessing.]


3) The Idea is differentiated without being differenciated. SH says this means, “That is, it operates according to an entirely different procedure of determination to that of the possible” (153). [The following is very complicated, and so I am afraid my summary will lack overall coherence. I will just follow the ideas as they are presented, and I will quote it all in the end so it can be understood better.] We first need to recall from chapter 1 how we differentiated things on the basis of ascribing to it its own properties, and thus we needed a concept of identity [in order to make predications to it]. So when “we describe an object by ascribing predicates to a subject,” “we differenciate it” (153). “The other procedure of determination generates structural properties by bringing into relation with each other elements which are in themselves undetermined (they are differentiated, in the sense of the differentials we looked at in 4.2)” (153) [I am not sure what might be an example of this, but perhaps the light example somehow works here]. SH explains that Deleuze uses Leibniz’ distinctions between clear and confused, and distinct and obscure in order to characterize these two sorts of organization. Recall how Leibniz traces the world back to possibility, that is, to possible worlds that God chooses from. So at first it seems that Leibniz will not provide for us a good philosophy for the notion of the virtual. However, his ideas regarding perception will give us “an important insight into the relationship between virtuality and actuality” (154). [The next idea is very complicated. We begin first with an example Leibniz gives of microperceptions, which are the small perceptions of, for example, all the tiny sounds each little wave makes, which together give us the composite total perception of the roar of the sea. What makes this seem complicated at least at first is we have these two levels of micro and macro perceptions, but we also note two languages, which each having two counterpart concepts. So we have the language of the roaring noise of the sea. It is a language of the clear-confused. The clarity comes from the roar being one unified thing that we might distinguish from other things. The confusion comes from the fact that we mix up all the constituent parts in order to make one coherent whole. Then we have the language of the individual waves themselves. This is the language of the distinct-obscure and also of the virtual (but I am not sure if the language of the whole roar is of the actual). It would be distinct if we hear each differential relation, that is, each wave by itself, but that would make the whole obscure, since we then would not be able to take in the roar as a whole mixture of them all. So the basic idea seems to be that there is always a tradeoff. Either we hear it coherently and clearly as a whole, in which case we lose the distinctness of the parts, or we hear the parts distinctly, and thereby lose the sense of the whole that the parts together are making up. Now we need to relate this to the notion that Idea is differentiated without being differenciated. The way this is so is not directly stated, so let us work with the definitions given above. SH explained that we differenciate when “we describe an object by ascribing predicates to a subject”. And something is differentiated when “determination generates structural properties by bringing into relation with each other elements which are in themselves undetermined,” and this is differentiation like in the calculus. In that case, it seems the Idea is differentiated in the sense of it being made of differential relations, but it is not differenciated, since each differentially related undetermined part is not perceived or conceived distinctly from one another, as none have an identity to which predicates can be ascribed.]

Finally, the virtual is differentiated without being differenciated. That is, it operates according to an entirely different procedure of determination to that of the possible. As Deleuze puts it, ‘one [the possible] refers to the form of identity in the concept, whereas the other designates a pure multiplicity in the Idea which radically excludes the identical as a prior condition’ (DR 211–12/263). We saw that Chapter 1 of Difference and Repetition deals at length with the claim that in order to determine something through the properties it possesses, we need some kind of concept of identity. This is because we describe an object by ascribing predicates to a subject (we differenciate it). The other procedure of determination generates structural properties by bringing into relation with each other elements which are in themselves undetermined (they are differentiated, in the sense of the differentials we looked at in 4.2). Deleuze characterises these two modes of organisation in terms of Leibniz’s distinctions between the clear and confused, and the distinct and obscure. We saw in Chapter 1 that Leibniz’s understanding of the world ultimately traces | it back to the notion of possibility, as God chooses the best of all possible worlds. Nevertheless, in his claim that perception of spatio-temporal objects is a confused perception of conceptual relations, we have an important insight into the relationship between virtuality and actuality. In the New Essays on Human Understanding, Leibniz puts forward the claim that perception of objects is based upon microperceptions below the threshold of the senses. In support of this theory, he gives the following analogy [the following up to citation is Leibniz quotation]:

To give a clearer example of these minute perceptions which we are unable to pick out from the crowd, I like to use the example of the roaring noise of the sea which impresses itself on us when we are standing on the shore. To hear this noise as we do, we must hear the parts which make up this whole, that is the noise of each wave, although each of these little noises makes itself known only when combined confusedly with all the others, and would not be noticed if the wave which made it were by itself. (Leibniz 1997: 54)

Deleuze interprets this passage as presenting ‘two languages which are encoded in the language of philosophy and directed at the divergent exercise of the faculties’ (DR 214/266). On the one hand, we have the language of the roaring noise of the sea. This is the language of the clearconfused. It is clear, in so far as I am able recognise the roar of the sea as a whole and take it up as an object, but it is confused as I only do so in so far as I do not take account of the elements (the waves) which together determine it as an object. On the other hand, we have the language of the waves themselves, which is the language of the virtual, and of the distinct-obscure. If, on the contrary, we focus on the noise of the waves themselves, the waves are perceived distinctly, as we grasp the differential relations that make up the noise as a whole, but also obscurely, since our focus on these particular relations precludes our comprehension of the ‘white noise’ of the sea as a whole. In contrast to Descartes’ notion of clear and distinct ideas, Deleuze’s claim is that ‘the clear is confused by itself, in so far as it is clear’ (DR 254/316). It is this radical divergence between the two languages of philosophy that allows us to give the sense of a proposition, or the conditions of experience, without simply falling into a banal reiteration of the structure of actuality.

Deleuze’s Anti-Gestaltist Perceptions




Deleuze is often considered an anti-phenomenologist. Yet even so, he generated an original theory of phenomena. So rather than determining whether he was a phenomenologist or an anti-phenomenologist, we might instead attempt to formulate what a Deleuzean phenomenology would be. To do so, we will place it in contrast with Merleau-Ponty’s accounts. A phenomenon, for Deleuze, appears as the shock we feel when incompatible parts of our awareness are given together simultaneously and instantaneously. Merleau-Ponty's phenomena, however, are based more on continuities and organic integrations. Often he articulates his notions of phenomenal holism and integration by making use of Gestalt illustrations.

Let us consider for example a familiar illusion, to demonstrate how our perceptions cannot be reduced to their particular components. One part of our perception are the parallel lines of equal length; the other part are the angled lines on the ends. But when these parts are together, we no longer see these same individual elements. Instead, the parallel lines appear now with different lengths, on account of their integrated relations with the angled pieces. Our perceptions, then, are wholes that are greater than the mere sums of their component parts.

For Merleau-Ponty, our phenomenal parts integrate by means of our horizonal awareness. Consider if we view a red carpet. Each part of our perception looks its particular way on account of the other qualities and objects expressing themselves in that appearance, for example, the overlaying shadow that tinges the color or the illuminated portions that lighten its tone. We are not surprised when looking up to see the source of light and the objects that block it. The red’s particular shaded or lighted look refers our mind to things not explicit in what we directly perceive.


Or consider how a stream’s surface might reflect the brownish hue of an overlying bridge. When looking at the water, we are not directly aware of the bridge, but it is being implicitly spoken or announced by the stream’s color. The stream would appear differently to us were it not for its integrated relation with the bridge above it. And likewise, when looking up at the bridge, we see in its appearance the motion of the water, reflecting up upon it. Our minds have an awareness of these related phenomena, but they are not in the forefront of our attention. As implicit phenomena, they hover at the edges of our awareness.

This also applies to phenomena on our temporal horizon. Merleau-Ponty refers us to an early film experiment. See if you notice the subtle variations that a man’s face undergoes as he reacts to very different things appearing before him.

Perhaps we saw hunger on his face after the soup, grieving after the dead child, and longing following the woman.




But in fact, the film footage for the face is the same each time. While the face is in our focus, the preceding image has not completely disappeared from our awareness and instead remains looming at the margin.

Our awareness retains the prior image, which speaks itself in the current one, by modifying how we perceive it. In this way, all our temporal horizons interlace to produce phenomena not reducible to any one moment of our awareness. They all must be taken together as making up a whole which is greater than the addition of the parts.

Rubin's Vase


Yet sometimes we will be surprised by what we notice, as if it were not implied in the horizon of our awareness. He points us to an optical illusion that is much like the figure-ground vase.

When the vase is the figure standing-out in the foreground, then the spaces on the side become a mere void. But when the faces jump into our awareness, the vase then becomes the blank background. Merleau-Ponty says that in cases like this, the changes can be so drastic that we might find ourselves perceiving another world. Yet, this does not mean one moment of our awareness becomes completely incoherent with the rest.


He depicts a scene to illustrate. We happen upon a ship run aground on the beach. Behind it is a forest, and the ship’s mast blends-in with the trees, preventing us from initially noticing it as belonging to the ship. But there will come a moment when something does not seem right about one of the trees. Before even seeing the mast as distinct from the forest, we felt some sort of tension in the appearance, like how “a storm is imminent in storm clouds,” as he puts it. Even from the beginning we had a ‘vague expectation’ that there was something more to be understood in the appearance of the forest.

Surprises in our perceptual world, then, are not contradictions between horizons; rather, they result from us further investigating ambiguous details already given in the margins of our awareness.

We will now draw a sharp distinction with Deleuze. As we noted, phenomena for Deleuze are shocks or flashes produced by irreconcilable differences that are forced together in our perceptual experiences. An illustration can be seen in Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. The hero believes that his female inspiration is someone who could only exhibit pure goodness. But without his knowing, she is captured by a mad scientist, who then renders her likeness upon a deviant robot. When the hero sees her replica, it is conspiring with his own father, a heartless tyrant. The woman whom the hero recognizes is drastically different from the woman he is actually viewing in that same moment, even though he cannot help but equate the two.

So two completely incompatible images are presented together simultaneously. The phenomenon here is neither the woman he recognizes nor the woman he now sees, but is rather the shock he feels from their impossible combination.

So in the vase illusion, we might first see the black space as a void background. But at some moment, our minds will tend toward seeing this emptiness also as a vase. Our experience is similar to the Metropolis hero’s disorientation: we will recognize what we see as a vase while seeing it also as a void, all within a split-second. The phenomena, then, would be neither the faces nor the vase, but rather the shocks we feel when the two are paradoxically given simultaneously.


So the integration of phenomenal horizons would not be of interest for a Deleuzean phenomenology. In fact, the less our horizons integrate, the more phenomenal our experience will be.


Another way Deleuze has us understand perceptions as being pure differences is by considering Leibniz’ micro-perceptions.

They are the differential relations between perceptions that have diminished to the infinitely small. They have vanished, but the relation between them remains. To help us visualize this, Leibniz describes a geometrical figure with two triangles, constructed with the same line. As this line moves to the right, one triangle increases while the other decreases. Yet the sides of both triangles remain proportional, so the ratio of the larger one always indicates the ratio of the smaller one. This holds even as the smaller triangle’s sides diminish to the infinitely small. They have vanished, but their differential relation remains, still discernible in the larger triangle.



Our micro-perceptions are also like these differential relations between vanished terms.
For example, when we perceive green, we are really noticing the differential relations between infinitely small perceptions of blue and yellow. At their basis, all our perceptions are primarily these undetectable micro-perceptions.

So the perception of green is not merely the addition of yellow and blue, like when we mix paint. Green results not from their assimilation and bleeding into one another, but rather from their jarring up against each other. And neither the micro-perceptions of yellow nor those of blue have green on their horizon. The whole is not at all implied in the parts. And the whole field of green we see is not even just a sum of its differential parts, nor is it a whole greater than these parts. For, the green is not even a whole to begin with. It has its particular green appearance also due to its own differential relations with other perceptions.

Consider this illusion. We seem to see four colors: two shades of green and two of red. But really there is just one red and one green.

They appear differently according to which neighboring color they are differentially relating to. So the appearance of the green in any given square is not just the sum of its yellow and blue differentials; the green is itself a differential as well.



In the parallel line illusion, then, it is not the integration of the parts which leads to the apparent disproportional size of the lines; rather, the phenomenon results from the differential relations in our eye movements. Perhaps, for example, the angles on the top-line make our eyes try to draw outward, all while those on the bottom cause our eyes to tend inward. The phenomena are not so much the resulting modified sizes as much as they are the shocks of difference between opposing tendencies in our eye-motions.
So a Deleuzean phenomenology would not make use of principles of integration and holism to explain our phenomenal experiences, not even the ones we have when seeing these Gestalt examples. Our question is: what is more phenomenologically interesting? Is it the way our perceptual parts all fall together nicely and blend with one another, or would it be the forces which arrest and hold our attention, and which make things stand-out and appear in the first place?



I would like to close by giving a better demonstration of Deleuzean phenomena, and for this I suggest the works of filmmaker Stan Brakhage. Deleuze refers to him when discussing the infinites of variation in our fields of perception. One thing Brakhage says he likes about film are its “sharp hard clarities of snapping individual frames.” In many later works, he hand-painted every frame individually. Each one could be a work of art on its own. But, is it only the pictures that we notice when watching his films? Or is there phenomenal content to the differences between the images, which are responsible for making each new frame stand-out in the first place?



First consider this simpler example from an earlier work. Moving one frame to the next, we change from black to red then return to black, all between other shifting imagery.

We will repeat this rapid transition here a few times, because it is easy to miss.

Is the phenomenon the red or the black, or is it not the shock we feel between the two? We might now consider how Brakhage uses this technique more subtly in his later painted films. Here perhaps he keeps us in a state of sustained phenomenal awareness, by means of the rapid succession of differences. So let’s close by viewing it in his Persian Series number 3.

Flow & Phenomena: Motivation and Horizon in Merleau-Ponty and Deleuze

What does phenomenal motivation got to do with any of us?

Our attention is constantly being turned this way and that. It seems like each turn is initiated by something we want to know more about by exploring it further with our awareness of it. Looking at a thing, we see a flash in the corner of our eye, and we turn to see what caused it. Could it be, then, that our attention is being driven by lacks, by lacks of knowing, by something mysterious or concealed that we want uncovered? In that case, we would be constantly dragged toward voids or ambiguities in our awareness; we sense something missing somewhere, so we turn to it so that it fills our awareness of it. But then upon becoming aware of it, we again sense something else in the periphery of our awareness that now pulls us somewhere else. Under such a view, we would regard our awareness as getting pulled around in certain directions by our curiosity.

Or perhaps at any given instant, our attention is pulled in every direction. And this would not be because we are missing knowledge of everything, but because what we are attending to now is already different from everything else. But for one reason or another, some of these other differences jump out to us more than others. What this means for our everyday living is that we need not feel like our attention is constantly being pulled around by one continuous string of movement. We can realize that our attention has every reason to turn in any possible direction. We are never reacting to what is missing in our attention. Everything is already fully there, because all we can attend to are differences. So we can instead go about our lives realizing the full range of possibilities to what we attend to next. The movement of our attention need not be mindless and automatic; it can be adventurous and fun.


Brief Summary:

The way we perceive something is conditioned by contextual factors that motivate that particular way things are appearing at that moment. Also the turning of our attention is motivated by other elements in our awareness which lie just at its current boundaries on its 'horizon.' For Merleau-Ponty, there is something concealed and curious on our awareness' horizon that serves to pull our attention in its direction. This is always the case, so there is continually a flow of new phenomena that rearrange how we are organizing the relations of our world.

But for a Deleuzean phenomenology, our horizon is unlimited; our attention could go any which way whatsoever. The motivation is not determined at all: the way we turn our attention might be conditioned in part by chance factors or unforeseeable influences. And because phenomena result from instantaneous flashes of difference between incompatibilities in our awareness, there is not a flow of phenomena, but rather phenomena are given in durationless instants where time does not pass.



We will look at Merleau-Ponty's concept of the flow of phenomena that we experience, which results from our attention being continuously motivated to see new parts of the world and see the organization of the world in new ways.

This entry will pick-up after our previous discussion on the child's first experiences of color. Merleau-Ponty wrote that the child first sees colors not distinctly but indeterminately. The more determinate forms that they later learn are originally only on the horizon of their awareness. However, after the determinate form enters their awareness, they no longer see the colors in their previous indeterminate way.

We will now discuss the how 'motivation' factors into this process, and that will lead us later to the idea of phenomenal flow.

We find reiterated in the following passage the idea that the new phenomenal organizations and structures of our awareness were only pregiven as horizons of our attention. The new configurations 'overthrow' the older ones.
To pay attention is not merely further to elucidate pre-existing data, it is to bring about a new articulation of them by taking them as figures. They are preformed only as horizons, they constitute in reality new regions in the total world. It is precisely the original structure which they introduce that brings out the identity of the object before and after the act of attention. Once the colour-quality is acquired, and only by means of it, do the previous data appear as preparations of this quality. Once the idea of an equation has been acquired, equal arithmetical quantities appear as varieties of the same equation. It is precisely by overthrowing data that the act of attention is related to previous acts, and the unity of consciousness is thus built up step by step through a ‘transition-synthesis’. The miracle of consciousness consists in its bringing to light, through attention, phenomena which re-establish the unity of the object in a new dimension at the very moment when they destroy it. (35b.c / fr. 54-55)
The new organization was originally given in an indeterminate horizon. It was not fully there, but on the verge of being there, and somehow being called-for prior to its being made explicit. So there will be something in our attention that we find ambiguous. Let's see if we can make an example with color acquisition. Consider the child seeing color indeterminately. She sees what is a red apple and a green one. Both of them have colors, but the color difference between them is not distinct. The child takes a bit from each. The flavors are different. Here is an ambiguity: 'how can two things whose appearances I do not distinguish also have very different tastes?' The child then in a holistic way organizes her world and its relations in a new way, where green apples and red apples are different, and the colors are what visually indicate or 'mean' this difference in flavor. So at first the colors were indeterminate, but there was a phenomenal ambiguity. The contrary properties involved in this ambiguity were then explicated, leading to a new form of awareness, one that now sees red and green as determinately different colors.

The ambiguity of the distinguished flavors from undistinguished colors calls the child to reexamine the color variations more closely. So this horizonal phenomenon
motivates the child's act of awareness to turn toward certain details and rearrange the holistically integrated network of relations in her world.

Merleau-Ponty also offers the example of seeing the moon as enlarged when it lies near the sky's horizon. If however we look at it through a card-board tube, it will cease to look so large. The reason it looks larger when seen on the horizon with our bare eyes is because all the other elements in our field of vision
motivate us to see the moon as larger. If you can, please see this interactive pictorial demonstration of the size constancy phenomenon. But he appears to shrink when we draw him nearer, and expand when we move him backward.

This could help explain the phenomenal motivation for seeing things differently. The visual context of the man in the front motivates us to think that he is small in comparison to the walls, but when he is further back, he looks larger in comparison to the walls. In the case of the moon, the visual elements around it for some reason motivate us to see it as larger.
Thus attention is neither an association of images, nor the return to itself of thought already in control of its objects, but the active constitution of a new object which makes explicit and articulate what was until then presented as no more than an indeterminate horizon. At the same time as it sets attention in motion, the object is at every moment recaptured and placed once more in a state of dependence on it. It gives rise to the ‘knowledge-bringing event’, which is to transform it, only by means of the still ambiguous meaning which it requires that event to clarify; it is | therefore the motive and not the cause of the event. But at least the act of attention is rooted in the life of consciousness, and one can finally understand how it emerges from its liberty of indifference and gives itself a present object. This passage from the indeterminate to the determinate, this recasting at every moment of its own history in the unity of a new meaning, is thought itself. ‘The work of the mind exists only in act.' The result of the act of attention is not to be found in its beginning. If the moon on the horizon appears to me no bigger than at the zenith, when I look at it through a telescope or a cardboard tube, the conclusion cannot be drawn that in free vision equally its appearance is invariable. (35c-36b/ fr. 55)
When I look quite freely and naturally, the various parts of the field interact and motivate this enormous moon on the horizon, this measureless size which nevertheless is a size. (36d / fr. 56)
We now turn to another sort of illusion. Consider a person whose eyes become paralyzed. Yet still she sees some scene before her. Normally her eyes would move around the scenery for some reason. So forgetting her eye cannot move, she intends to move her eye. What she sees is the scene moving to the left, even though her eye does not move. This is because the scenery does not lose it motivating factors, which in this case motivate her awareness to move perhaps to the right (so that the scene moves to the left.) So in the case of the size changes with the hallway-man or the moon, our perception alters on account of the contextual motivating factors. Hence it should only be expected that even a still image will alter also given its phenomenal motivating factors. The part that is doing the motivating is already there in the scene. It is sort of like something concealed but present to the attention. Because there is always this motivating concealed part of every phenomenon, there is a flow of phenomena resulting from a continual alteration of motivation.

the phenomenological notion of motivation is one of those ‘fluid’ concepts which have to be formed if we want to get back to phenomena. One phenomenon releases another, not by means of some objective efficient cause, like those which link together natural events, but by the meaning which it holds out—there is a
raison d’être for a thing which guides the flow of phenomena without being explicitly laid down in any one of them, a sort of operative reason. Thus the intention to look to the left and the fact that the landscape remains stubbornly fixed in one’s gaze bring about the illusion of movement in the object. To the degree that the motivated phenomenon comes into being, an internal relation to the motivating phenomenon appears; hence, instead of the one merely succeeding the other, the motivated phenomenon makes the motivating phenomenon explicit and comprehensible, and thus seems to have preexisted its own motive. (57-58 / fr. 76)
Let's wonder now how these concepts would appear in a Deleuzean phenomenology. In the first place, we would consider everything appearing to us to be made entirely of differential relations; they are microperceptions of imperceptibly small differences [see this entry on differential perception]. Consider the example of the scene observed by an immobilized eye. From the Deleuzean perspective, every part of the scene differentially relates to every other part. Our eye will want to go to the part that is the most different, the part that stands-out the most, that is, the part that most catches our eye. But since everything is differentially related, our eyes are pulled in all directions at once. However, for reasons that vary for each instance, some sets of differential relations will pull our eye more strongly. That does not absolutely determine our eye motions. There may be internal forces of the body which resist phenomenal forces or which create motivational forces of their own. And perhaps some of the motivation is not determined by anything other than chance factors, like the chance operations that our brains naturally make. The point is that at any moment, we really cannot say what the motivation is. After the fact we might be able find some cause for why our attention turned to its new direction. But at any moment, the turning of our attention is not determined at all. In Deleuzean phenomenology, this would be motivational freedom. Our awareness can take any of an infinity of different and incompatible turns. What is on the horizon is not what comes to be made phenomenally explicit. What is on the horizon is every possible variation in our attention and resulting change in the world. In Deleuzean phenomenology this would but limitless horizonality, or maybe universal horizon. It is not that these other things in our awareness are concealed. They are fully there, because they are what is creating the differential relations that are pulling our attention. The phenomena are not the things we are now looking at and will look at. Rather, the phenomena are the differential relations between them; that is to say, the Deleuzean phenomena are all the microperceptions between every infinitely small part of our awareness, creating a full field of nothing but differences.

So let's summarize the distinctions we are making between Deleuze's and Merleau-Ponty's phenomenal motivation: for Merleau-Ponty the horizon contains something vaguely or ambiguously, but for Deleuze the horizon contains everything implicitly. And for Merleau-Ponty, the motivating phenomena on the horizon determine where our attention turns. Yet for Deleuze, nothing is determined, rather there are a competition of forces with the outcome decided partly by chance factors.

The next difference between them is that for a Deleuzean phenomenology there would be no flow of phenomenon. Each phenomenon is instantaneous. It is like a flash of difference. When something just catches our eye, the phenomenon is not that other thing or the thing we currently look at; rather, the phenomena are the differential relations between the parts of each which cause both sets to resonate and shake from the shocking difference communicated to one another. This resonance we experience as the shock-wave of differential disturbance shot through our bodies [see this entry on Spinoza and rhythm for more on these continuous variations of affection].
