Arboreal Morality

Friedrich Nietzsche

The Will to Power

§ 332
(Nov. 1887-March 1888)

It would seem silly to speak of a tree "as it ought to be." Trees have no moral obligation to be anything at all. Likewise, it sounds stupid to say "a man as he ought to be." We too have no moral obligations to act in certain ways.
