Brief summary:

The elemental phenomenal structure of fact has the following characteristics: it is logically contingent, accidentally actual, unconditionally necessary, and brute in the sense of being force without law or reason. This notion of fact can still fit within a deterministic view, so long as we only consider the elemental structure of fact by isolating simple actions from their context of other related actions that might be said to cause them. Facts involve accidental pairings of things in which the brute force exerted by the one upon the other places them into a dyadic relationship, meaning that from the perspective of the first, it is acting upon the second, and from the perspective of the second, it is being acted upon by the first. We learn of facts either directly, when they resist our exertions and thereby inform us of an external world outside our ego, or indirectly, as when others give us testimony of their own direct relation to facts or when we observe the physical effects of resistance between the actions of external objects. And, a fact’s existence consists in the existence of its effects in the world. This mode of ‘being over against something else’ is existence itself, which is fact’s mode of being. The fact is individual in two senses, namely, by being over against something else through brute force, it is independent of that other thing, and by being independent of the qualities or determinations it may or may not contingently have, depending on the circumstances of the interaction. So far, these observations cover the first seven characteristics of fact, to which Peirce adds five more. Facts {1} have distinct features, {2} are either accidentally actual or involve brute force, {3} have a here and now, {4} are dyadic, {5} are the sum of their consequences, {6} exist by fighting, {7} are determinate with respect to qualities they could possess, {8} have a subject, which is the grammatical subject of the sentence asserting the existence of the fact, {9} are always connected with reciprocal facts (which may or may not be separable from the first fact), {10} are naturally classifiable into dichotomies, especially into dichotomies of reciprocal facts, {11} are such that, whenever  there is a variation in a reciprocal fact, this means there has been a change in the qualities of the subjects and not the creation or destruction of either subject, {12} are accidental and simply happen to come into an encounter rather than depending on each other before that for their existence. While this list is not necessarily exhaustive, it is sufficient for our purposes of comparing fact and duality and of explaining why all phenomena are composed of quality, fact, and law.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Summary

[We may characterize the elemental phenomenal structure of fact as being logically contingent, accidentally actual, unconditionally necessary, and brute. It is a matter of brute force in the sense that it is force without law or reason. But it is not general. So it is not the negative generality of quality’s potentiality nor is the positive generality of law’s conditional necessity. It furthermore is thus not permanent or eternal, as these are matters of generality too.]

 

[Peirce will now define fact in a way that properly places it in the context of the other elemental phenomenal structures of law and quality. Law is a matter of generality, which includes things which are permanent or eternal and also things that are conditional. Thus fact is not these things. Peirce says that there is a negative sort of generality, as what characterizes the potentiality of quality, and also there is a positive sort of generality, namely, conditional necessity, which is characteristic of law. Fact, however, is a matter of the contingent (in the logical sense) and thus of the accidentally actual, and it is also a matter of brute force, which is force without law or reason, and which is anything involving an unconditional necessity.]

Next, what is fact?

As before, it is not the usage of language which we seek to learn, but what must be the description of fact in order that our division of the elements of phenomena into the categories of quality, fact, and law may not only be true, but also have the utmost possible value, being governed by those same characteristics which really dominate the phenomenal world. It is first requisite to point out something which must be excluded from the category of fact. This is the general, and with it the permanent or eternal (for permanence is a species of generality), and the conditional (which equally involves generality). Generality is either of that negative sort which belongs to the merely potential, as such, and this is peculiar to the category of quality; or it is of that positive kind which belongs to conditional necessity, and this is peculiar to the category of law. These exclusions leave for the category of fact, first, that which the logicians call the contingent, that is, the accidentally actual, and second, whatever involves an unconditional necessity, that is, force without law or reason, brute force.

[The notion that there is brute fact goes against a deterministic view that sees a broad context where all events operate according to fixed laws. However, we can analyze situations and phenomenal experiences so to isolate simple actions taken without context to others, and as such we find that accidental factuality and brute force (that is, not law-guided force) are elemental parts of phenomena and events.]

 

[Peirce then addresses the objection that there is no such thing as brute force, freedom of the will, and the accidental. Peirce disagrees. But for the sake of argument he will consider these claims as true. (I am not entirely sure I understand what ‘brute’ means in this context. It seems the thinking here is the following. Some people object, because they believe the world is purely deterministic. So a brute force or action for some reason cannot be one happening in a deterministic system. Perhaps this is because a deterministic system operates according to regularities and laws, but something brute has no reason behind it. Rather, it just is what it is and does what it does, without any cause or reason. Peirce next seems to be saying that the ones who object see the system of actions and reactions on a large scale, as if taking a birds-eye-view on the world. However, were we to only consider each action on its own, without placing it into relation with other actions, then it would be brute. He says that it would be brute, even if it does not show brute force. So perhaps the idea is that it would have no cause or reason, and also that it may not be affecting anything else.) Peirce continues to note that there is still a way to understand phenomena as exhibiting force without reference to law. (Perhaps the idea is that force would normally operate according to laws, but brute force would not.) Our own sense of our exercise of our will is one such case. (Peirce’s next point seems to be that although we might normally place the state or actions of something into a broader context where law, regularity, and generality seem at play, we can also decompose such a context down to the singular elements involved, thereby stripping away the other law-guided elements. As such, we can say that accidental factuality is an elemental part of larger phenomenal structures, and it can be seen as such by means of some sort of analysis.)]

It may be said that there is no such phenomenon in the universe as brute force, or freedom of will, and nothing accidental. I do not assent to either opinion; but granting that both are correct, it still remains true that considering a single action by itself, apart from all others and, therefore, | apart from the governing uniformity, it is in itself brute, whether it show brute force or not. I shall presently point out a sense in which it does display force. That it is possible for a phenomenon in some sense to present force to our notice without emphasizing any element of law, is familiar to everybody. We often regard our own exertions of will in that way. In like manner, if we consider any state of an individual thing, putting aside other things, we have a phenomenon which is actual, but in itself is not necessitated. It is not pretended that what is here termed fact is the whole phenomenon, but only an element of the phenomenon – so much as belongs to a particular place and time. That when more is taken into account, the observer finds himself in the realm of law in every case, I fully admit. (Nor does that conflict with tychism.)

[Facts are accidental coincidences of pairs of things in which the brute force exerted by one upon the other places them into a dyadic relationship, meaning that from the perspective of the first, it is acting upon the second, and from the perspective of the second, it is being acted upon by the first. Regularity and law cannot be established between just two things. It requires a third which shows there to be some regularity imposed upon the relations of all the parts. Without that third thing, two parts are merely coincidental. Yet simply being coincidental does not mean that the two parts are really dyadic, as they might merely be the combination of two independent things. For there to be a dyad, the dual relation between the two needs to involve the brute force of the one acting upon the other asymmetrically.]

 

[So in order to arrive upon fact, we need to analyze the situation to strip away contextual factors which are matters of generality and law. However, if we analyze the situation too much so that we arrive upon a monadic structure with no parts, then we are examining quality and not fact. Thus, we need to attend to something more than a monad or quality but less than a triad or law. Peirce then says that among instances of fact, we consider some of them to be especially accidental in nature. While the other cases are no less factual, we will examine first these special instances, because in them the accidental nature of fact is most obvious. Peirce notes that we call these highly accidental facts “coincidences” because in them we see “the coming together of two things”. We need at least two things in order to form a coincidence, and if more things are involved, that does not change the essential coincidental nature of the situation. Peirce’s next point is remarkable. Regularity cannot be found in only two things. It requires at least three. (Perhaps the idea here is the following. Two things may have similarities are connections which could be construed as governing the way that such parts relate to one another. But there is no such confirmation or obvious evidence of there being such a regularity between them. It could be that other parts would relate differently than these two have. However, were there a third part, then the similarities in how all three relate can tell us for example that the way one pair relate bears a similarity to the way another pair relate, and thus there may be something beyond the coincidental combinations governing the way that such parts relate.) He gives the example of dots. Were there only two dots, there is no regularity yet. However, were their three dots, they could be arranged in some regular way, as for example were they arranged in a straight line or if they formed the vertices of an equilateral triangle. (So perhaps the three dots could be arranged in an irregular sort of way. But as soon as they form a straight line, we find that the way the third relates to the other two is in accordance with a regularity that is in place for all the dots, namely, that none may vary at a different angle from the others. And if the points are the vertices of an equilateral triangle, there again is a regularity that is in force on all three, because they each are set off from one another at the same angle. But just two dots, no matter how they are positioned in relation to one another, have no apparent regularity, because the third term is needed to confirm that some consistency in the manner of relation is imposed on the parts.) Peirce notes some possible exceptions, which in fact still hold to this schema. Two dots on the surface of the earth may be placed antipodally, with that antipodality being the regularity. However, here the third term is the earth itself, which establishes the spherical regularity governing the antipodal positioning of the points. (The next example I do not understand, but I will explain why. He writes: “So two straight lines in a plane can be set at right angles, which is a sort of regularity. But this is another rule proving exception, since <AOB is made equal to <BOC. Now those angles are distinguished by being formed of two different parts of the line AC; so that really three things, OA, OB, and OC are considered.” As far as I understand, “<AOB” would be an angle where O is the vertex, and A and B are points on the different rays emanating from that vertex. So I can conceive of a right angle <AOB. But then what is <BOC? It would seem to have the same vertex (O) and the same point on one line (B) and thus that same ray, but there is now point C instead of A. I would have understood if he wrote “<AOB is made equal to <BOA”, but I do not know what the C is here. Possible Peirce is using a different notation convention for angles, but probably I just miss an obvious idea. Possibly also he means that one right angle is to be understood as sharing the angular properties of any other right angle, but then I do not know why he would use two of the same letters in the notation, and also then we have added more terms than just two or three. He says further that angles <AOB and <BOC are made by forming two different parts of the line AC. This is further confusing for me. Was there originally a long line AC, and it was bent or taken apart? If so, how was that done so to produce <AOB and <BOC? Here a diagram would have been helpful or some clarification on the notation.) (He then seems to conclude that accidental actuality is thus the coincidental and not law-governed coming together of two things.) Peirce now turns to the issue of brute force. He writes that “The type of brute force is the exertion of animal strength.” So we can formulate in our mind an action we want to take. But the actual execution of that act can only happen when we exert the force necessary to commit it. He further notes that strength cannot be exerted unless there is something to resist that exertion. (For, without that resistance, no effort would be needed and thus no force would be exerted). This means that we have a duality of units that are not symmetrically related. Suppose simply there is a coincidence of two phenomena with no active or interactive relation between them. Here we simply have a monoidal dyad. (Perhaps the idea here is that it is not a dyadic dyad, because there is no dyadic relation. It is the simple sum of two monads. But I am not sure.) However, were a first object to act on a second one, while the second resists or reacts upon the first, then we have more than two things coincidentally related. We also have them in an oppositional relation, (making the relation dyadic rather than the bare combination of monads. I may not be following this part properly. The overall notion seems to be that Peirce shows that simple accidental coincidence is not enough for a dyadic relation. There needs to be two perspectives, one upon the other, which are inversely related such that one part can be said to be receiving action and the other giving it. For more on this conception, see especially sections 1.326-1.328.)]

On the other hand, if the view be limited to any part of the phenomenal world, however great, and this be looked upon as a monad, entirely regardless of its parts, nothing is presented to the observer but a quality. How much, then, must we attend to, in order to perceive the pure element of fact? There are certain occurrences which, when they come to our notice, we set down as “accidental.” Now, although there is really no more of the factual element in these than in other facts, yet the circumstance that we call them par excellence contingent, or “accidental,” would lead us to expect that which distinguishes the realm of fact from the realms of quality and of law, to be particularly prominent in them. We call such facts “coincidences,” a name which implies that our attention is called in them to the coming together of two things. Two phenomena, and but two, are required to constitute a coincidence; and if there are more than two no new form of relationship appears further than a complication of pairs. Two phenomena, whose parts are not attended to, cannot display any law, or regularity. Three dots may be placed in a straight line, which is a kind of regularity; or they may be placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, which is another kind of regularity. But two dots cannot be placed in any particularly regular way, since there is but one way in which they can be placed, unless they were set together, when they would cease to be two. It is true that on the earth two dots may be placed | antipodally. But that is only one of the exceptions that prove the rule, because the earth is a third object there taken into account. So two straight lines in a plane can be set at right angles, which is a sort of regularity. But this is another rule proving exception, since <AOB is made equal to <BOC. Now those angles are distinguished by being formed of two different parts of the line AC; so that really three things, OA, OB, and OC are considered. So much for accidental actuality. The type of brute force is the exertion of animal strength. Suppose I have long ago determined how and when I will act. It still remains to perform the act. That element of the whole operation is purely brute execution. Now observe that I cannot exert strength all alone. I can only exert my strength if there be something to resist me. Again duality is prominent, and this time in a [more] obtrusively dual way than before, because the two units are in two different relations the one to the other. In the coincidence the two phenomena are related in one way to one another. It is a monoidal dyad. But in the exertion of strength, although I act on the object and the object acts on me, which are two relations of one kind and joined in one reaction, yet in each of these two relations there is an agent and a patient, a doer and a sufferer, which are in contrary attitudes to one another. So that the action consists of two monoid dyads oppositely situated.

[The formal dyadic structure of fact might also mean that there is a correspondence between the contents and combinations of particular phenomena with particular ideas. In pursuit of this possibility and to learn more about fact in general, we will examine it further.]

 

[Thus fact is a matter of two, and law a matter of three or more. And we saw already how quality is a matter of one. (The next point I do not follow well enough. The first idea seems to be that we should not be surprised to find that certain kinds of phenomenal parts have their own sort of manner of forming relations with other parts. The next idea might be elaborating on this, saying that some categories of parts are too complex to be included among the simpler types, but I am not sure. The following point might be that the categories of types come to be strongly associated in our minds with such formal conceptions regarding their manner of relation. He next point is that we in fact should be surprised to find that the material parts of phenomena are coextensive with formal ideas. I am not sure what he means here exactly. As a result of this fact, we should try to understand better what the dyad’s connection is. I did not follow the reasoning in these sentences, so please see the quotation below. Maybe his point is that the fact that types of phenomenal parts have formal structures to their manners of relation could make us wonder if the phenomenal parts and their relations constitute or coincide with certain formal ideas, as if one such combination produces or correlates with one idea, and another combination with another idea. So we should examine the dyadic structure to see if and how ideas might correspond to it. That is a guess.) Peirce will exclude for now cases of fact where there seems to be a triad formation, “such as a process with beginning, middle, and end”. We can return to those cases after we examine law, as there might be an element of generality involved in this cases. So Peirce will first examine fact more closely to determine more of its properties. Secondly he will consider the element of duality in fact.]

All this renders it quite certain that the nature of fact is in some way connected with the number two, and that of law with three or some higher number or numbers, just as we have already seen that quality is described by means of the number one. But although it is hardly more than might be expected to find that a particular form – that some are too complex to suit this matter, while others [are] too simple to call into action its distinctive powers – and that in that way that category comes to have an intimate affinity with a certain formal conception, yet it would certainly be astonishing if it should turn out that material constituents of phenomena were coextensive with formal ideas. We consequently wish to discover just what the connection of the dyad with fact is. We shall do well to postpone the consideration of those facts which seem to involve a triad, such as a process with beginning, middle and end, until we have examined the nature of law. For we naturally suspect, after what has been pointed out above, that where there is a threeness in a fact, there an element of generality may lurk. Putting aside then, for the present, triadic facts, we may add to the properties of fact already noticed such others as may seem worth mention, and may then turn to the consideration of duality, its properties and different formal types, so as to compare these with what is to be remarked in regard to fact.

[We learn of facts directly when they resist our exertions. They give us undeniable evidence of an external world and of something outside our own ego. When we are interrupted, this is a matter of resistance, and it is only different in degree to exertions of our will. We can also learn of facts indirectly, as when others give testimony (and thus with them having experienced the resistance directly) or when we see physical effects in the world (thus with that resistance being directly experienced by physical objects).]

 

[The way that we come to know facts is by their resisting us. We can question the external world as much as we want, but we cannot deny it or that there is something more than our ego when we anger someone else and they knock us down. This resistance that meets us from without shows us that there is something independent to us. Even when we have a sensation, there is resistance, because our mind’s train of thought has been interrupted. Now, since exerting our will and being interrupted both involve resistance, they are different really only in the degree of the resistance involved. Peirce then notes that facts can be learned without oneself undergoing resistance to them. This happens when we learn facts indirectly. One way this can take place is if someone tells us about some fact. (In that case someone still had to encounter resistance to learn the fact in the first place). The other way is by observing the physical effects of a fact (and in that case still something is meeting with resistance in a physically observable way).]

Whenever we come to know a fact, it is by its resisting us. A man may walk down Wall Street debating within himself the existence of an external world; but if in his brown study he jostles up against somebody who angrily draws off and knocks him down, the sceptic is unlikely to carry his scepticism so far as to doubt whether anything beside the ego was concerned in that phenomenon. The resistance shows him that something independent of him is there. When anything strikes upon the senses, the mind's train of thought is always interrupted; for if it were not, nothing would distinguish the new observation from a fancy. Now there is always a resistance to interruption; so that on the whole the difference between the operation of receiving a sensation and that of exerting the will is merely a difference of degree. We may, however, learn of a fact indirectly. Either the fact was experienced directly by some other person whose testimony comes to us, or else we know it by some physical effect of it. Thus we remark that the physical effects of a fact can take the place of experience of the fact by a witness. Hence, when we pass from the consideration of the appearance of a fact in experience to its existence in the world of fact, we pass from regarding the appearance as depending on opposition to our will to regarding the existence as depending on physical effects.

[A fact’s existence consists in the existence of its effects. Otherwise it is a mere potentiality and quality. To be a fact, something must encounter resistance to its exertions and thereby have an effect in the world. The mode of being of ‘being over against something else’ is existence, which is fact’s mode of being.]

 

[Peirce then says that the existence of a fact consists in the existence of its effects. (His thinking here might be that certain facts may not be directly evident or at least not yet verified, but they are evinced in their effects. So we consider what at first is just a “supposed” fact, and it is shown to be a real fact if all its consequences reveal it to be such.) His example is something that is supposed to have the fact of being hard, and indeed it does act in every respect like a hard thing. Its actual fact of being hard consists then in its behaving in such a way that its actions have the consequences that result from hard things. (What is odd here is that its factuality is not something that can be real unless it is having some effect. Perhaps the idea is that it could not possibly be having no effect, and thus the facts of something are always inherent to it. Or perhaps the idea is that it can have certain qualities, like potentialities (as firsts), and they are only actualized when they have consequences. And thus the object could have the quality of hardness on its own and without having any effects, but it can only have the factuality of hardness if that hardness has certain effects in the world.) Peirce says that “the fact fights its way into existence,” because “it exists by virtue of the oppositions which it involves”. (In other words, without opposition, there can be no fact.) He continues, “It does not exist, like a quality, by anything essential, by anything that a mere definition could express”. Rather,  facts “take place” here and now. We know facts personally when they resist our brute will. (Peirce means brute in the sense of unreasoning. See paragraphs above.) We thus can conceive of a fact as something “gaining reality by actions against other realities”. Peirce calls existence the mode of being that comes from something not simply being itself but rather “being over against a second thing”, and thus existence is the mode of being that belongs to fact.]

There can hardly be a doubt that the existence of a fact does consist in the existence of all its consequences. That is to say, if all the consequences of a supposed fact are real facts, that makes the supposed fact to be a real one. If, for example, something supposed to be a hard body acts in every respect like such a body, that constitutes the reality of that hard body; and if two seeming particles act in every respect as if they were attracting particles, that makes them really so. | This may be expressed by saying that the fact fights its way into existence; for it exists by virtue of the oppositions which it involves. It does not exist, like a quality, by anything essential, by anything that a mere definition could express. That does not help its mode of being. It might hinder it; because where there is not a unit there cannot be a pair; and where there is not a quality there cannot be a fact; or where there is not possibility there cannot be actuality. But that which gives actuality is opposition. The fact “takes place.” It has its here and now; and into that place it must crowd its way. For just as we can only know facts by their acting upon us, and resisting our brute will (I say brute will, because after I have determined how and when I will exert my strength, the mere action itself is in itself brute and unreasoning), so we can only conceive a fact as gaining reality by actions against other realities. And further to say that something has a mode of being which lies not in itself but in its being over against a second thing, is to say that that mode of being is the existence which belongs to fact.

[Since there are many types of existence in the universe, that means every existence is a matter of being something that is over against  other things (namely, the other types of existence). This is another way to arrive upon the conclusion that the being of fact is existence, which is ‘being over against a second thing’.]

 

[Peirce it seems will argue a different way for this notion that fact’s being is existence, which is being over against a second thing. (I will not be able to summarize or explain this part, so you will need to read the quotation to follow. Somehow the fact that there are different types of existence means that each kind has a place among the others, and thus it is a second to other objects, with the universe itself being a first. Please consult the quotation below.)]

The same conclusion can be reached by another line of thought. There are different kinds of existence. There is the existence of physical actions, there is the existence of psychical volitions, there is the existence of all time, there is the existence of the present, there is the existence of material things, there is the existence of the creations of one of Shakespeare's plays, and, for aught we know, there may be another creation with a space and time of its own in which things may exist. Each kind of existence consists in having a place among the total collection of such a universe. It consists in being a second to any object in such universe taken as first. It is not time and space which produce this character. It is rather this character which for its realization calls for something like time and space.

[The fact is individual in two senses: 1) it exists by means of brute force that places something over against other things, thus making it independent of them, and 2) it is independent of many qualities, which it determinately either has or does not have. In other words, it is individual because it is independent and separate from other things and because it is independent from determinations it may or may not have.]

 

[Unlike law, fact is not general. Rather, it is individual. Peirce says that ‘individual’ expresses two things peculiar to facts: namely, 1) its brute force of being over against something opposing it, and 2) its being independent of qualities and determinations. (I may not have followed his wording right in how I summarize the distinction, so please consult the quotation below.) The first character, Peirce says, is the one that we just discussed above (on fact’s existence as opposition), and it includes the idea of the fact consisting in brute force or self-assertion. Facts have no reason, and this is what distinguishes the individual fact from the general fact or law as well as distinguishing the individual fact from quality or possibility, “which only hopes it won’t be intruding”. The second character of fact that ‘individual’ expresses is that the fact is determinate in the sense that it either possesses or does not posses some or another possibility or quality. (Above Peirce seemed to have said that this is a matter of fact being independent of qualities and determinations. Perhaps the idea is that a fact is independent of certain qualities and determinations, but not of others, which it possesses. Or maybe the idea is that since fact either can have certain determinations or not, that makes facts in general something more than their determinations, which are contingent. I am not sure.) This is unlike law, which always remains partly indeterminate (perhaps because it applies to instances that may not exist yet). ((Another possibility is that the idea here is that only individuals can take qualities, but facts are dyads.)).]

When we speak of a fact as individual, or not general, we mean to attribute to it two characters each of which is altogether peculiar to facts. One of these is the character just described, the other having a mode of being independent of any qualities or determinations, or, as we may say, having brute fighting force, or self-assertion. The individual fact insists on being here irrespective of any reason, whether it be true or not | that when we take a broader view we are able to see that, without reason, it never could have been endowed with that insistency. This character makes a gulf between the individual fact and the general fact, or law, as well as between the individual fact and any quality, or mere possibility, which only mildly hopes it won’t be intruding. But besides that character, individuality implies another, which is that the individual is determinate in regard to every possibility, or quality, either as possessing it or as not possessing it. This is the principle of excluded middle, which does not hold for anything general, because the general is partially indeterminate; and any philosophy which does not do full justice to the element of fact in the world (of which there are many, so remote is the philosopher's high walled garden from the market place of life, where fact holds sway), will be sure sooner or later to become entangled in a quarrel with this principle of excluded middle.

But in making our distribution of the elements of phenomena into quality, fact, and law, we were led to notice additional features of fact. I continue to take them up promiscuously.

Even though this subject of fact is understood as physical, this will not contradict idealism or the view that material things have a psychical substratum.]

The eighth feature of fact is that every fact has a subject, which is the grammatical subject of the sentence that asserts the existence of the fact. Indeed, in a logical sense, there are two subjects; for the fact concerns two things. One of these two subjects, at least, is a thing itself of the nature of fact, or we may express this in other words by saying that the existence of this subject is a fact. This subject is a thing. It has its here and now. It is the sum of all its characters, or consequences. Its existence does not depend upon any definition, | but consists in its reacting against the other things of the universe. Of it every quality whatever is either true or false. That this subject, whose actions all have single objects, is material, or physical substance, or body, not a psychical subject, we shall see when we come to consider psychical subjects in discussing the nature of law. This does not in the least contradict idealism, or the doctrine that material bodies, when the whole phenomenon is considered, are seen to have a psychical substratum.

[The ninth feature of fact is that every fact is connected with a reciprocal fact. This is because any fact requires that it has some effect on something else. However, the second fact may or may not be separable from the first one. It is inseparable if its own factuality depends on that of the first, as in cases where both facts evince themselves by interacting with similar facts, as for example the hardness of one body requires interaction with the hardness of a second, and therefore the second requires the hardness of the first. It is inseparable however if the first fact can manifest equally whether or not any of its potential reciprocal facts are present, as for example were a hard object to melt in a vessel and fill the open spaces, either displacing the gasses already at the bottom or not if it is a vacuum (however there will still be some other reciprocal fact, perhaps somehow changing the balance or center of gravity of the vessel).]

 

[Peirce turns to the ninth feature of fact, which is that every fact is connected with a reciprocal fact. And, the reciprocal fact may or may not be inextricably bound up with the first fact. He gives the example of two colliding objects. The first object striking the second is one fact, and the second object striking upon the first is the other fact. (The next idea seems to be the following. Suppose that one of the striking bodies has some hardness to it, but the other body does not. Perhaps the first body would pass through the second, and there would be no striking to begin with, and the second body would perhaps even be unable to offer some resistance to the first. Thus,] “if one body is hard, there must be a second body of some degree of hardness for the former to resist”. (You will have to consult the quotation below, as I may misinterpret this paragraph. It seems his next idea is that certain facts are separable from their reciprocal facts. So the second hard body could disappear, but that will not do away with the first body’s fact of hardness, because some third hard body might be affected by it. He next gives the example of a hard body melting and filling the empty places in its vessel. He says at the beginning of this change there will be another change reciprocal to the first one. But I am not sure what that could be. Perhaps for example it might displace air in those vacant spaces, pushing it upward while the melted material falls downward. He also says there may not be such a consequence. So perhaps for example the melting happens in a vacuum. So he concludes that us distinguishing different types of facts that are inseparable from reciprocal facts does not thereby divide the facts into ones whose reciprocal facts are separable and those that are not. The first example he gave of hard bodies striking was supposed to exemplify inseparable reciprocal facts. But he also said that the annihilation of the second body does not destroy the hardness of the first. I am not following so well, but perhaps he is saying that the hardness of the second body requires the hardness of the first body for its own hardness, just as the first requires the second, and is therefore an inseparable fact. Let me quote.)]

It seems that although all facts have their reciprocal facts, we can still think of them independently, but here we will think of them in their pairings, hence the qualification ‘dual fact’. However, it could also be that a dual fact is one whose reciprocal fact is inseparable, because in the following Peirce will make that distinction. In all, I do not follow Peirce’s point in this paragraph very well, so please consult the quotation to follow. I will guess. Perhaps he is making the following points. Let us begin with his example, and I will offer first an interpretation of what it might be illustrating. A star suddenly bursts into view, but there is no external subject that caused it to do so. Since nothing caused it to come into existence, the star must already have been in existence. However, it varied over time, as it was previously not visibly bright but now it is. So the fact of its pre-existence is shown in its becoming bright, but so too is its brightness being shown. And the third fact it shows is that previously there was dark. Probably this illustration is making some other point than that. Peirce says that this is the only way we can deduce metaphysical truths. Perhaps he is saying that we deduce the metaphysical truth of the star’s pre-existence on the basis that nothing else could have caused it to come into being, and also that nothing can arise out of nothing. Peirce earlier said also that when there is an action that destroys or produces something, then “either a third subject will be concerned, so that the fact is one of these the study of which we have expressly postponed, or that which is produced or destroyed will be one of those facts whose reciprocal facts are separable”. For the first case, perhaps he is saying that the third fact would be the cause of the destruction or production. Regarding if they are separable or not, perhaps the idea is that the existence of the second fact does not depend on the existence of the first, so it can be destroyed or produced by other causes. But I do not follow, so please check the quotation. Finally Peirce concludes that the subjects of facts are permanent and eternal. Let me further guess. He might be saying that in this example there are two inseparable facts, the fact of the darkness of one thing and the fact of the brightness of the other. The increasing brightness of the star does not destroy the darkness of the dark thing nor does it attest to the creation of the bright thing. It rather shows the existence of these reciprocal facts and only shows there was a variation in their reciprocal qualities. The point might be then that the variation which attests to the existence of one fact attests to the existence of the other, but it does not attest to the creation or destruction of either, since that would for some reason require a third thing. But I do not know why one fact cannot destroy another, unless the idea is that it would destroy itself in the process. Yet even then I would not know why that would disqualify it as an instance of destruction of reciprocal fact.) ]

The eleventh feature of dual fact is that if it involves any variation in time, this variation consists of a change in the qualities of its subjects, but never the annihilation or production of those subjects. We may, indeed, conceive of an action by which something is produced or destroyed. But either a third subject will be concerned, so that the fact is one of those the study of which we have expressly postponed, or that which | is produced or destroyed will be one of those facts whose reciprocal facts are separable. Brief summary:

A quality is not, as the conceptualists see it, something that only exists in sensation. Suppose the lights go out while seeing a red thing. The conceptualist says that it is not red any more. This means either that the thing becomes indeterminate with regard to the color or it takes on the opposite quality, namely, the capacity to absorb rather than transmit the light waves of the color. It does not help the conceptualist argument to say that  it takes on the opposite quality, because there is no evidence of this and anyway it would still be taking on an unperceived quality, which the conceptualist says it should not be doing. Consider instead the claim that the thing becomes indeterminate with regard to the unperceived qualities. Since most qualities of a thing go unperceived, that makes things be largely indeterminate while the qualities remain the concrete contents of the world. So were the light to go out, the thing would vary while the qualities would not, and thus it would still have to be red even if it were not seen. For, were the qualities to disappear, then the real substantial parts of the world would come and go simply on account of changing conditions of the object’s presentation, which is absurd. And even if the conceptualist argues that there are two types of qualities, the real mechanical ones and the non-real sensed ones, with the non-real sensed ones varying according to conditions of presentation, then we still have unperceived qualities, namely, the real mechanical ones. The nominalist argument that qualities exist only in the objects exhibiting them also does not hold. For, were that so, there would be no laws governing the future, because laws cannot manifest immediately by means of the qualities of the presently existing things. Thus the future would be completely unpredictable and indeterminate in relation to the present, which seems unlikely, and there would only be the reality of the present instant. Yet, it is highly questionable that there could be no more in physical reality than a simple present instant. No, instead, qualities are monadic and indecomposable parts of the world primarily and of our experience secondarily when we sense them. As such, they are pure possibilities until being actualized, but this will involve sensation, which is a matter of dyadic relations.

 

 

 

 

Summary

[Peirce will define a quality first in terms of what it is not. It is not, as conceptualists hold, something that exists only in sensation and only when it is sensed. For them, a red thing when the light go out is no longer red. But there are three ways the conceptualist may defend this claim, and all fail. It cannot be that the object takes on opposing qualities, like absorbing long light waves rather than reflecting them, when the lights go out. There is no evidence of this, and it also asserts that there are unperceived qualities that exist, namely the new opposite ones, but that goes against their basic claim. It also cannot be that the object becomes indeterminate with regard to the unperceived properties. Since most properties are unperceived, that makes the object itself highly indeterminate and thus not concrete, unlike the qualities, which end up being the real substantial content of the world, as they are the determinate content. But this means that when the qualities go unperceived, part of the real world disappears, which is absurd, so really this position in the end would have to concede that the qualities remain even when unperceived. The third option is related to the second. It says that there are two types of qualities, mechanical qualities, which are real, and sensible qualities, which are not real. This also simply concedes the point that there are qualities that exist unperceived, namely, the real mechanical ones. This view makes the mistake of thinking that the potentiality for quality to be perceived is nothing more than its real actualization, when in fact qualities can exist potentially and later become actualized through sensation of them. Qualities also do not, as nominalists hold, exist nowhere and at no time else but when they actual inhere in something. This would mean that laws, which determine future events and thus do not inhere in things now, could not exist and the future would be entirely undeterminable. That would furthermore mean that only qualities that are found in the instantaneous present exist. But the instant is a highly questionable concept.]

 

[Peirce will begin his discussion of quality by saying what it is not. For something to be a quality, it cannot depend on anything else for its being. (For similar discussion, see section 1.305.) This means it cannot be understood on the basis of a mind in terms of sense or a thought. Its being what it is also does not depend on whatever physical object has that quality. Peirce then notes different schools of thought which have conceived of quality erroneously. The conceptualists think that quality is dependent on sense. (I am not familiar with this idea. It might be that qualities are not real things in the world but only arise by means of our sensing things and are also somehow to be understood in terms of concepts rather than as real properties of things.) The mistake that nominalists make is to say that qualities are dependent upon the subject in which it is realized (in other words, in the object exhibiting it). (Note, Peirce discusses nominalism and realism in sections 1.15-126.) Instead, quality should be understood “as a mere abstract potentiality”. (Recall how Peirce characterizes qualities as “may-bes”. They are what they are regardless if they are thought to inhere in some object or subject. In other words, they are “not necessarily realized” ((see section 1.304 and also section 1.310, and sections 1.328-1.329).) These other schools make the mistake of thinking that quality, which is potential or possible, is “nothing but what the actual makes it to be”. (I am not certain, but the idea here might be that these other schools think of quality as being whatever the mind or subject takes it to be, and in that sense it is a matter of actuality. Instead, the quality should be understood independently of how a mind or subject would experience or regard it. In other words, the actual circumstances in the world that would affect the reception of a thing’s qualities along with the actual circumstances of one’s own physical and mental situation are what determine the quality, rather than it being something really existing on its own independently of these other conditions that affect the reception of it.) Peirce then restates the problem “It is the error of maintaining that the whole alone is something, and its components, however essential to it, are nothing”. (In this case, I do not know what the whole and the parts are that he is referring to, since qualities as I understand do not have parts. Perhaps the whole would be the overall situation of the thing’s presentation and the person’s reception, including all the factors that modify the presentation and reception. So maybe the error Peirce is referring to is the mistake of saying that the real qualitative features of a thing are secondary to ones that arise through the combined factors of its presentation and reception.) Peirce says we can refute these schools’ positions by noting that “nobody does, or can, in the light of good sense, consistently retain it” (the “it” here is the position the school takes.) The conceptualist would say that the quality of red depends on someone actually seeing it. Thus in the dark a red thing is no longer red. To dispute the conceptualist position, Peirce asks the conceptualist, “do you really mean to say that in the dark it is no longer true that red bodies are capable of transmitting the light at the lower end of the spectrum? Do you mean to say that a piece of iron not actually under pressure has lost its power of resisting pressure?” (So we see that for the conceptualist, the red object is not red in the dark, and the iron stops having the quality of resisting pressure when it is not receiving pressure.) Peirce then addresses a couple of ways the conceptualist might answer this question. (We might here note that to say ‘no’ may mean that they have given up their position.) The first is to say ‘yes’ to these questions. In that case, they have two further options. One is to say that the objects acquire the opposite properties under these conditions which make their original properties no longer evident. So when in the dark, the red object will absorb long waves of the light spectrum rather than transmit them. (Also, the iron would gain the capacity to condense under small pressure rather than have the capacity to resist pressure. This example is less clear to me, because originally the difference was between the iron being under pressure and not being under pressure, where here it is under small pressure. Peirce might be saying that under this view, the iron would be said to obtain the ability to shrink were pressure applied to it, whenever no pressure is applied, but it does not actually shrink then. It only obtains that opposite capacity.) Peirce says that this reply will not work, for the following reason. There is no factual basis to make this claim, and also, it still claims that there are unperceived qualities in the things (the quality of absorbing long light waves rather than transmitting them, for example). So we cannot answer yes to the questions and assert that objects take-on the opposite qualities when conditions make them unperceived. The other way to say yes to these questions is to say that the bodies which possess the qualities that go unperceived under certain conditions become indeterminate with regard to those unperceived qualities. (I am not sure what this means, but the idea might be that for example in the dark whether or not the red object is still red is something indeterminate in those conditions.) Peirce says that if this is what we argue, then we are thereby claiming that generals (qualities) really exist but concrete things do not. (The reasoning for this seems to be the following. Peirce notes that most of the qualities of bodies are not perceived. This perhaps means that objects are for the most part indeterminate with regard to their qualities. And perhaps further that means that the qualities, or generals, are what do exist determinately, but bodies do not.) This means that the concrete things in the world are the qualities, which we believe to exist, and the non-concrete things are the bodies, which we do not believe to exist. (I am not sure why something indeterminate would not be seen as existing, however. Perhaps the idea is that only concrete things can exist, as they have determinate features, but when something does not have determinate features, it is somehow intangible and not real.) Peirce then says that in order to be consistent with this position, we need to conclude that red things still have color in the dark. (I am not certain how to conceive that, but perhaps Peirce is saying that this is an absurd result of the position in question. However, I am not sure why one needs to conclude that the indeterminate object is still red when it is dark, given the reasoning we have considered so far. Maybe the idea is that as something real, and especially as something more real than the red object itself, the redness cannot just disappear under certain changes which alter the unreal thing that it inhabits. For, that would make the object more real than the quality, which we already said was not the case.) Peirce then notes a way someone taking this view might avoid the problem we just observed. Someone might say that there are two kinds of qualities, real ones, “mechanical qualities” (perhaps meaning ones structurally inherent to the objects) and not real qualities, sensible ones that vary depending on the conditions which make the object indeterminate or determinate with regard to certain sensible qualities. (I am not sure however if the sensible qualities depend on the mechanical ones.) But, Peirce observes, this is consistent with the opposite point that this view is trying to take. For, this view wants to say that qualities do not exist when they become unperceivable, but now it is saying that there are such qualities, namely, the mechanical ones. Peirce then adds that modern psychology would say that this distinction does not hold anyway (but Peirce does not explain why). Peirce next notes that for a realist, a quality is a possibility of sensation. So while a sensation is needed for the quality to come to light, it remains a possibility even when it is not actualized by sensation. And this possibility is the being of the quality. (The conceptualist makes the mistake of seeing the actually perceived quality as being that quality itself rather than being what has arisen out of the actualization of its possibility of coming to light.) (So one cannot take the conceptualist view and say that qualities only exist when they are sensed.) Peirce then turns to the nominalist view, and he says we can make a similar answer to their position. (Peirce seems to be saying that nominalists hold that qualities only exist when they actually inhere ((and not just potentially inhere)) in some body.) The claim that a quality only exists when it actually inheres in a body leads to inconsistencies. Suppose it were true. This means that only individual facts can be true. (Perhaps he means that only the real actualized conditions of the world can be true, as no other qualities or situations can exist beside them). Laws, then, as things which determine future events, would not be real or true, because they do not involve things as they are but rather as they will be. And if laws do not exist, the future is entirely indeterminate, leaving reality to be no more than an instantaneous state. But an instant is something whose reality is already highly questionable. (So since there are laws, qualities must exist as potentialities, and thus the nominalist position is wrong, as it holds that qualities only exist when actually inhering in bodies.)]

 

What, then, is a quality

Before answering this, it will be well to say what it is not. It is not anything which is dependent, in its being, upon mind, whether in the form of sense or in that of thought. Nor is it dependent, in its being, upon the fact that some material thing possesses it. That quality is dependent upon sense is the great error of the conceptualists. That it is dependent upon the subject in which it is realized is the great error of all the nominalistic schools. A quality is a mere abstract potentiality; and the error of those schools lies in holding that the potential, or possible, is nothing but what the actual makes it to be. It is the error of maintaining that the whole alone is something, and its components, however essential to it, are nothing. The refutation of the position consists in showing that nobody does, or can, in the light of good sense, consistently retain it. The moment the fusillade of controversy ceases they repose on other conceptions. First, that the quality of red depends on anybody actually seeing it, so that red things are no longer red in the dark, is a denial of common sense. I ask the conceptualist, do you really mean to say that in the dark it is no longer true that red bodies are capable of transmitting the light at the lower end of the spectrum? Do you mean to say that a piece of iron not actually under pressure has lost its power of resisting pressure? If so, you must either hold that those bodies under the circumstances supposed assume the opposite properties, or you must hold that they become indeterminate in those respects. If you hold that the red body in the dark acquires a power of absorbing the long waves of the spectrum, and that | the iron acquires a power of condensation under small pressure, then, while you adopt an opinion without any facts to support it, you still admit that qualities exist while they are not actually perceived – only you transfer this belief to qualities which there is no ground for believing in. If, however, you hold that the bodies become indeterminate in regard to the qualities they are not actually perceived to possess, then, since this is the case at any moment in regard to the vast majority of the qualities of all bodies, you must hold that generals exist. In other words, it is concrete things you do not believe in; qualities, that is, generals – which is another word for the same thing – you not only believe in but believe that they alone compose the universe. Consistency, therefore, obliges you to say that the red body is red (or has some color) in the dark, and that the hard body has some degree of hardness when nothing is pressing upon it. If you attempt to escape the refutation by a distinction between qualities that are real, namely the mechanical qualities, and qualities that are not real, sensible qualities, you may be left there, because you have granted the essential point. At the same time, every modern psychologist will pronounce your distinction untenable. You forget perhaps that a realist fully admits that a sense-quality is only a possibility of sensation; but he thinks a possibility remains possible when it is not actual. The sensation is requisite for its apprehension; but no sensation nor sense-faculty is requisite for the possibility which is the being of the quality. Let us not put the cart before the horse, nor the evolved actuality before the possibility as if the latter involved what it only evolves. A similar answer may be made to the other nominalists. It is impossible to hold consistently that a quality only exists when it actually inheres in a body. If that were so, nothing but individual facts would be true. Laws would be fictions; and, in fact, the nominalist does object to the word “law,” and prefers “uniformity” to express his conviction that so far as the law expresses what only might happen, but does not, it is nugatory. If, however, no law subsists other than an expression of actual facts, the future is entirely indeterminate and so is general to the highest degree. Indeed, nothing would exist but the instantaneous state; whereas it is easy to show that if we are going to be so free in calling elements fictions an instant is the | first thing to be called fictitious. But I confess I do not take pains accurately to answer a doctrine so monstrous, and just at present out of vogue.

[We turn now to the features of qualities with respect to their place among the two other sorts of phenomena, facts and thoughts. We will examine how qualities are apprehended and what is given in those apprehensions.]

 

[Now having explained what qualities are not, Peirce will now try to say what they in fact are. We know that phenomena are of three categories: quality, fact, and thought. Peirce will try to define quality in terms of this division. To do so, we need to examine the way that qualities are apprehended and the “point of view” from which “they become empathic in thought”. While conducting this analysis, we must observe what is revealed to us in this mode of apprehension.]

 

So much for what quality is not. Now what is it? We do not care what meaning the usages of language may attach to the word. We have already seen clearly that the elements of phenomena are of three categories, quality, fact, and thought. The question we have to consider is how quality shall be defined so as to preserve the truth of that division. In order to ascertain this, we must consider how qualities are apprehended and from what point of view they become emphatic in thought, and note what it is that will and must be revealed in that mode of apprehension.

[When we attend just to the content of our experiences without regard for the relations between those contents, we become aware of the qualities, which as singular and unrelated to anything else, are monadic.]

 

[Peirce then says that there is a way for the world to appear to us as no more than sensible qualities. For this, we must “attend to each part as it appears in itself, in its own suchness, while we disregard the connections”. So things like red, sour, and a toothache, each on their own are of their own sort and are indescribable (perhaps because we need to appeal to other qualities to describe one.) (The next idea seems to be that general qualities can be discerned in specific ones. So if we imagine all different sorts of pains, thinking just of the impressions they give us and not of the imaginative content involved in them, we will obtain the idea of a general quality of pain.) Peirce next notes that quality is thus a monad with no reference to its parts or to anything else beside it. (Here he might be thinking of a quality as a monad in the sense of “__ is red” ((see CP3.465)). Under such a conception, no things are being related, but potentially the quality can be instantiated depending on if something exhibits that quality. In sections 1.289-1.290, Peirce says that what makes a phenomenon monadic, dyadic, or triadic has to do with its valencies. So what makes something monadic is that it has a valency of one, meaning that by itself it can only form a relation with one other thing. In sections 1.346-1.347, we saw examples of how these valencies work in a way to combine relations together. But I am not sure if these two sorts of monads, the sentential kind and the phenomenal valency kind, are the same. For example, I do not know how for example two qualities could be connected by means of an empty argument place. Would we have: “ ‘___is very hot’ is painful” or something like that?) Qualities should not be conceived in terms of whether or not they exist, because this requires we place them within “the general system of the universe” (and thus in relation to other things, rather than have them considered independently). And since it is by itself in its own world, it is therefore simply potential. (Perhaps this is because it would for some reason require a relation to other things to exist in actuality ((but I do not know why)) and so without anything else, it can only be a potentiality ((which could be actualized when entering into relation to something else. Perhaps this would happen when the argument place of the monadic relational structure is filled, as with “the apple is red”)).)]

There is a point of view from which the whole universe of phenomena appears to be made up of nothing but sensible qualities. What is that point of view? It is that in which we attend to each part as it appears in itself, in its own suchness, while we disregard the connections. Red, sour, toothache are each sui generis and indescribable. In themselves, that is all there is to be said about them. Imagine at once a toothache, a splitting headache, a jammed finger, a corn on the foot, a burn, and a colic, not necessarily as existing at once – leave that vague – and attend not to the parts of the imagination but to the resultant impression. That will give an idea of a general quality of pain. We see that the idea of a quality is the idea of a phenomenon or partial phenomenon considered as a monad, without reference to its parts or components and without reference to anything else. We must not consider whether it exists, or is only imaginary, because existence depends on its subject having a place in the general system of the universe. An element separated from everything else and in no world but itself, may be said, when we come to reflect upon its isolation, to be merely potential. But we must not even attend to any determinate absence of other things; we are to consider the total as a unit. We may term this aspect of a phenomenon the monadic aspect of it. The quality is what presents itself in the monadic aspect.

[Phenomenal experiences may be complexly and heterogeneously composed. However, the qualitative component of any experience is singular and indecomposable.]

 

[A phenomenon can be complex and heterogeneous, and yet this will not affect it qualitatively, and if anything, will (somehow) make it more general. (Perhaps Peirce is saying that there can be many different components to a phenomenal experience, but qualitatively it will be singular. Maybe this is because the qualitative element is somehow the synthesis of all the components, but I am not sure.) Whatever quality is involved in the experience, it is indecomposable (unlike the experience itself, which can be complex) and sui generis (because it cannot enter into relations with anything else, including relations of comparison which might place it under a broader category). Peirce next says: “When we say that qualities are general, are partial determinations, are mere potentialities, etc., all that is true of qualities reflected upon; but these things do not belong to the quality-element of experience”. (Perhaps he is saying that these features of qualities are not apparent while experiencing them, but they come to light secondarily upon reflection.)]

The phenomenon may be ever so complex and heterogeneous. That circumstance will make no particular difference in the quality. It will make it more general. But one quality | is in itself, in its monadic aspect, no more general than another. The resultant effect has no parts. The quality in itself is indecomposable and sui generis. When we say that qualities are general, are partial determinations, are mere potentialities, etc., all that is true of qualities reflected upon; but these things do not belong to the quality-element of experience.

[Qualities are monadic elements of the real world primarily, being potentialities of experience, and they are actualized secondarily through sensation, which also involves a dyadic structure of interaction with things in the world.]

 

[Quality is not just something that is only a part of our experience. Qualities are the monadic components of the real world. They are possibilities of sensation. But when we begin taking into consideration the fact that we must respond to these qualities in the world to sense them, we move into dyadic structures.]

 

Experience is the course of life. The world is that which experience inculcates. Quality is the monadic element of the world. Anything whatever, however complex and heterogeneous, has its quality sui generis, its possibility of sensation, would our senses only respond to it. But in saying this, we are straying from the domain of the monad into that of the dyad; and such truths are best postponed until we come to discuss the dyad.

Brief summary:

In order to better understand mathematical necessity, we should first analyze experience in general. For, all necessary mathematical hypotheses are (somehow) obtained through experience. In particular, what we find by examining experience in general is that there are just three categories of elements of phenomena. The fact that there are no more but three will shed light on the mathematical hypothesis of number itself. The three categories of elements of phenomena are the following: {1} Qualities, like red, bitter, noble, etc. They are timeless possibilities rather than actual facts or determinate events. They are what they are without any relation to other things, but they have no perfect identities (for, to have such would require that they be understood in relation to other things). {2} Actual facts. They have temporal determination and individuality. We feel facts when we sense something outside us resisting our will. We directly sense facts, because our sensation is inherently a matter of resistance and reaction. From these experiences of secondness we infer the qualities of the external things we sense. {3} Laws or thoughts. They are not qualities, because unlike thoughts, qualities are timeless and do not admit of generation and development. Also, thoughts, unlike qualities, have reasons behind them. Thoughts or laws are not like a fact, because they are general and apply even to non-actual situations. However, thoughts and laws are general in the sense that they apply to the possible world of qualities, and they are factual in that they also apply to the actual world of actuality.  The proper subject of law is thought or the mind, which is foreign to quality (of Firstness) and individual action (of Secondness), just as these two other subjects are foreign to one another.

[Pierce says his paper where will deal with mathematics. But, it seems from what Peirce says with regard to his distinction between logic utens and logica docens that his conern with mathematics here will be more philosophical. Here are some explanations of this terminology:

The distinction between logica utens and logica docens was drawn by medieval logicians and borrowed by Peirce. Logica utens is one’s unreflective judgment of the validity of informal arguments. It is a general idea of what good reasoning is. In contrast, logical docens is the reflective and precise rules of reasoning in formal systems” (Bunnin & Yu, 401)

 

According to Peirce, formal reasoning (or logica docens) is comprised of the process of deliberately making certain types of inferences at certain stages of an inquiry. On the other hand, reasoning habits (logica utens) are the acritical, and thus, non-deliberate, application of instinctive habits for making inferences. Our logica utens allows us to perform the thinking that “our regular business requires us daily to do[1].

Peirce says that specifically he will deal with the following questions about mathematics: What are the different systems of hypotheses from which mathematical deduction can set out? What are their general characters? Why are not other hypotheses possible? ... and questions like these. Normally in mathematics the problems are based on “clear and definite assumptions recognized at the outset”. These questions, however, will not have that advantage. But what makes these problems like mathematical ones is that they are concerned with possibility and necessity. And the nature of necessity is something he will examine. He then characterizes necessity in a way that reminds me of modal logic where something is necessary if it holds for all possible worlds. (See Nolt Logics section 11.2.1.) For Peirce, the necessity of mathematical hypotheses “must spring from some truth so broad as to hold not only for the universe we know but for every world that poet could create”. However, he also writes that this truth must be obtained through experience. (But I do not understand how that would happen for mathematical hypotheses, which to me would seem to be things that are not fashioned on the basis of experience but rather from pure conceptual thinking.) He then says that we should thus first examine the most universal categories and elements of all experience, “natural or poetical”. I am not exactly sure what he means by “natural or poetical,” but I assume he means either given in experience as we know it or otherwise as it could be in some possible world.]

Although the present paper deals with mathematics, yet its problems are not mere mathematical problems. It is not proposed to inquire into the methods of reasoning of mathematics particularly, although this subject will incidentally be touched upon. But mathematics performs its reasonings by a logica utens which it develops for itself, and has no need of any appeal to a logica docens; for no disputes about reasoning arise in mathematics which need to be submitted to the principles of the philosophy of thought for decision. The questions which are here to be examined are, what are the different systems of hypotheses from which mathematical deduction can set out, what are their general characters, why are not other hypotheses possible, and the like. These are not problems which, like those of mathematics, repose upon clear and definite assumptions recognized at the outset; and yet, like mathematical problems, they are questions of possibility and necessity. What the nature of this necessity can be is one of the very matters to be discovered. This much, however, is indisputable: if there are really any such necessary characteristics of mathematical hypotheses as I have just declared in advance that we shall find that there [are], this necessity must spring from some truth so broad as to hold not only for the universe we know but for every world that poet could create. And this truth like every truth must come to us by the way of experience. No apriorist ever denied that. The first matters which it is pertinent to examine are the most universal categories of elements of all experience, natural or poetical.

[There are three categories of elements of phenomena. The first are pure qualities, which can be found in every phenomenon. They have no perfect identities, and yet (somehow) each one is what it is without relation to others.]

 

[Peirce says that “among phenomena [there are] three categories of elements”. The first category of phenomenal elements are qualities, like “red, bitter, tedious, hard, heartrending, noble”. Peirce then notes the objection that these are not qualities of things, and thus they do not actually exist in the world but rather are merely sensations. Peirce sees this as a question of “whether we ought to say that it is the senses that make the sense-qualities or the sense-qualities to which the senses are adapted”. I am not sure if he is going to answer this or not, but he does state that “wherever there is a phenomenon there is a quality; so that it might almost seem that there is nothing else in phenomena”. He also says that qualities merge into each other; they only have likeness or partial identities and not identities of their own; some of them form systems, like colors and musical sounds; and in fact, if our experience of qualities were not so fragmentary, we might even find that there are “no abrupt demarcations between them, at all”. But despite this, “Still, each one is what it is in itself without help from the others. They are single but partial determinations”. (I have difficulty finding the overall point he is making here, or if he is simply listing features of qualities.)]

We remark among phenomena three categories of elements.

 

The first comprises the qualities of phenomena, such as red, bitter, tedious, hard, heartrending, noble; and there are doubtless manifold varieties utterly unknown to us. Beginners in philosophy may object that these are not qualities of things and are not in the world at all, but are mere sensations. Certainly, we only know such as the senses we effect of the evolutionary process which has made us what we are has been to blot the greater part of the senses and sensations which were once dimly felt, and to render bright, clear, and separate the rest. But whether we ought to say that it is the senses that make the sense-qualities or the sense-qualities to which the senses are adapted, need not be determined in haste. It is sufficient that wherever there is a phenomenon there is a quality; so that it might almost seem that there is nothing else in phenomena. The qualities merge into one another. They have no perfect identities, but only likenesses, or partial identities. Some of them, as the colors and the musical sounds, form well-understood systems. Probably, were our experience of them not so fragmentary, there would be no abrupt demarcations between them, at all. Still, each one is what it is in itself without help from the others. They are single but partial determinations.

[The second category of elements of phenomena are actual facts. They have temporal determination and individuality. We directly sense facts, because our sensation is inherently a matter of resistance and reaction. From these experiences of secondness we infer the qualities of the external things we sense.]

 

[The second category of elements of phenomena are actual facts. A quality by itself is too vague and potential to be something individual. But “an occurrence is perfectly individual”. It has a certain spatial and temporal specificity, as “It happens here and now”. (I am not sure what can be said about a quality in this regard. It would seem that a quality does not even ‘happen’. It has a timelessness of sorts to it. We discussed the temporality of firstness for example in section 1.305 and section 1.307.) Peirce then mentions “permanent facts”. I am not sure exactly what these are. Perhaps they are facts that came about and stay that way. I would not think they are like laws of physics, which I assume are thirds. He says that permanent facts “are less purely individual.” I am not sure why. Perhaps the idea is that since they are permanent, they do not have limiting temporal boundaries which would individualize them. But again, without an example it is hard for me know. He then writes that qualities are concerned with facts but they do not make up facts. So a quality might be something that occupies our minds as a result of something we perceive or interact with in the exernal world. But facts cannot be said to be made of qualities. Here we again see the non-reducibility of one structure to the others. (For this notion, see sections 1.345 to 1.347.) Facts are not simply sensed things. They are material substances in the external world that resist our will, which is why “facts are proverbially called brutal”. Qualities, however, do not resist or react, but matter does. (His next point is that we directly perceive matter. His reasoning seems to be the following. When we sense something there is a reaction and a resistance. Perhaps it is our body’s reaction to what we sense and a resistance to strong influence. But, qualities do not react or resist. So qualities are not directly involved in our sensing. For, were they involved, they would somehow participate in this reaction and resisting that is inherent to sensing. This means that we do not “infer matter from its qualities.” Instead, we directly perceive matter, and we somehow “infer qualities by generalization from what we perceive in matter”.) Peirce emphasizes that quality and fact (or action or actuality) are both elements of phenomena.]

The second category of elements of phenomena comprises the actual facts. The qualities, in so far as they are general, are somewhat vague and potential. But an occurrence is perfectly individual. It happens here and now. A permanent fact is less purely individual; yet so far as it is actual, its permanence and generality only consist in its being there at every individual instant. Qualities are concerned in facts but they do not make up facts. Facts also concern subjects which are material substances. We do not see them as we see qualities, that is, they are not in the very potentiality and essence of sense. But we feel facts resist our will. That is why facts are proverbially called brutal. Now mere qualities do not resist. It is the matter that resists. Even in actual sensation there is a reaction. Now mere qualities, unmaterialized, cannot | actually react. So that, rightly understood, it is correct to say that we immediately, that is, directly perceive matter. To say that we only infer matter from its qualities is to say that we only know the actual through the potential. It would be a little less erroneous to say that we only know the potential through the actual, and only infer qualities by generalization from what we perceive in matter. All that I here insist upon is that quality is one element of phenomena, and fact, action, actuality is another. We shall undertake the analysis of their natures below.

[The third category of elements are laws or thoughts. They are distinct from qualities (of Firstness) for two reasons: {1} qualities are timeless and do not admit of generation and development, while thoughts in contrast can be produced and can grow, and {2} thoughts have reasons for being what they are, but qualities do not. Laws and thoughts are distinct from facts (of Secondness) for two reasons: {a} thoughts are general in the sense that they can be given from person to person, but facts cannot be exchanged, and {b} thoughts are general in the sense that they refer to all possible things and not, like facts, just to things that happen to exist. Also, laws or thoughts cannot be reduced to a set of facts, because laws refer to more facts that can be actualized. However, even though a law is different than qualities and facts, it can be said still in a sense to be a general fact, so long as we do not call any actual fact a general fact. A law (understood as a general fact) can be said to be general, because it applies to the potential world of quality, that is to say, it applies potentially to various possible ways that the qualitative features of the world can find expression. And a law (again understood as a general fact) can be said to be factual, because it concerns the actual world of actuality. The proper subject of law is thought or the mind, which is foreign to quality (of Firstness) and individual action (of Secondness), just as these two subjects are themselves foreign to one another. ]

 

[The third category of elements are, from an exterior point of view, laws, but from both an interior and exterior point of view, are thoughts. (I am not sure what the conceptual significance is in this terminological distinction. I suppose were we to take an objective point of view on the workings of the world, we would call these factors that have thirdness laws, as like the laws of physics. But suppose we could somehow get inside the “mind” (perhaps in a cosmic sense) that conceives these laws or suppose that we can take the perspective of the rational structures themselves that are responsible for these laws, we would think of them as thoughts, because they are rational entities that are formulated, in some sense, conceptually. You will have to interpret that first sentence for yourself, as I am not sure I know what Peirce means by “both sides of the shield”.)  (Recall again from section 1.305 and section 1.307 that) Qualities are “eternal, independent of time and of any realization”. (This means they cannot be thought of as arising and developing.) However, thoughts are things that can be “produced and grow,” and thus thoughts are not qualities. Also, thoughts have reasons for being what they are, but qualities do not. Peirce next explains why a thought is not a fact. A law or thought is general. But a fact cannot be general, in two senses. It cannot be given from one person to another. But a thought can. (I suppose the idea here is that some fact, like some collision of objects, is not something one person can give to another; for, it is an event that transpires in a certain place at a certain time, and therefore it cannot be put into another place at another time. Thoughts however can be communicated between minds. And perhaps also the idea here is that they can be instantiated in different places at different times. But that might be the next idea.) Also, a fact only refers to things that happen to exist. But a thought refers to all possible things. So for these two reasons a thought is not a fact. Peirce then notes the non-reducibility of a thought or law to a fact. (Again, for this notion, see sections 1.345 to 1.347.) He says that no collection of facts could ever constitute a law, because a law is not confined to facts but rather is determinative of how facts can be, and that determination is for all facts, even ones that would never actually occur. He then says that we can consider laws as general facts so long as we do not think that any given fact constitutes a law. For, a law has some element of potentiality to it. (Let me quote the next idea before discussing it.) “As general, the law, or general fact, concerns the potential world of quality, while as fact, it concerns the actual world of actuality”. (We just noted that a law could be seen as a general fact, so long as we do not confuse it with actual facts. Now he seems to be explaining in what sense a law can be understood as having generality and in what sense it can be seen as being factual. The part about generality is not so clear. He seems to be saying that law, being that it concerns anything possible that it is relevant to, is specifically concerned with the potential world of quality. But it is not obvious to me what the potential world of quality is, at least as it relates to laws. I would normally think that laws apply primarily to facts, and secondarily to qualities. In other words, there is some factual event in the world. Let us think of the physical event of the train whistle blowing, which is an example he has used. There is then the event (involving effort and resistance) of us perceiving that whistle. And then we experience the pure quality of the sound. But I do not understand how laws apply directly to the potential world of quality. Recall from section 1.313 that Peirce also has this idea of qualities being real things that subsist in objects, and thus for example when a woman wears a certain perfume, her own essence, like the qualities of her personality, get mixed with the qualities of the perfume: “A lady’s favorite perfume seems to me somehow to agree with that of her spiritual being. If she uses none at all her nature will lack perfume. If she wears violet she herself will have the very same delicate fineness” (157). So I am not at all certain, but to offer a guess, perhaps Peirce is saying with regard to laws and the potential world of quality that since the things in the world are expressive of certain pure qualitative essences, and furthermore, because laws govern the ways things in the world operate, that in this sense laws as general things concern the potential world of quality. That is probably not what he means, so please consult the quotation to follow. The point however, about laws as fact concerning the actual world of actuality is much easier to conceptualize, especially when we think of the example of physical laws.) Peirce’s next point seems to be that firstness, secondness, and thirdness all involve primarily different subjects. For example, action, which is the proper subject of secondness, is something foreign to mere quality, which is the subject of firstness. The peculiar subject of law is thought or mind, which is foreign to mere individual action. And given their very different subjects, quality, law, and action are all very remote from one another.]

The third category of elements of phenomena consists of what we call laws when we contemplate them from the outside only, but which when we see both sides of the shield we call thoughts. Thoughts are neither qualities nor facts. They are not qualities because they can be produced and grow, while a quality is eternal, independent of time and of any realization. Besides, thoughts may have reasons, and indeed, must have some reasons, good or bad. But to ask why a quality is as it is, why red is red and not green, would be lunacy. If red were green it would not be red; that is all. And any semblance of sanity the question may have is due to its being not exactly a question about quality, but about the relation between two qualities, though even this is absurd. A thought then is not a quality. No more is it a fact. For a thought is general. I had it. I imparted it to you. It is general on that side. It is also general in referring to all possible things, and not merely to those which happen to exist. No collection of facts can constitute a law; for the law goes beyond any accomplished facts and determines how facts that may be, but all of which never can have happened, shall be characterized. There is no objection to saying that a law is a general fact, provided it be understood that the general has an admixture of potentiality in it, so that no congeries of actions here and now can ever make a general fact. As general, the law, or general fact, concerns the potential world of quality, while as fact, it concerns the actual world of actuality. Just as action requires a peculiar kind of subject, matter, which is foreign to mere quality, so law requires a peculiar kind of subject, the thought, or, as the phrase in this connection is, the mind, as a peculiar kind of subject foreign to mere individual action. Law, then, is something as remote | from both quality and action as these are remote from one another.

[Peirce says that we will now try to determine why there are only these three categories of phenomena. For, the reason why there are just three categories will help us understand the mathematical notion of number, which is mathematics most universal hypotheses.

Having thus by observation satisfied ourselves that there are these three categories of elements of phenomena, let us endeavor to analyze the nature of each, and try to find out why there should be these three categories and no others. This reason, when we find it, ought to be interesting to mathematicians; for it will be found to coincide with the most fundamental characteristic of the most universal of the mathematical hypotheses, I mean that of number.
