In order to “wish the things which happen to be as they are” (Epictetus Enchiridion 8, Long trans., Perseus. See section 2.1.4.0.32.1; « vouloir les événements comme ils se produisent »), we must know and understand them, which means also that we must interpret them. As Epictetus writes, “God has introduced man to be a spectator of God and of His works; and not only a spectator of them, but an interpreter” (Discourses, Book 1, Ch.6., line 19. Long trans, Perseus. “L’homme, dit Epictète, est né « pour contempler Dieu et ses œuvres, et non seulement pour les contempler, mais encore pour les interpréter ».”) To interpret means to place into contact or relation. But it is of little importance at the moment whether this contact or relation is [final or simply causal]. It must, in any case, so that the relation can be established, that there be at least two terms. Thus, when the Stoics want to establish the order of providence, they show how things are well adapted to one another. And note that for them, the semiological sciences consist of relating a sign to a signified. [I assume they assign a sign now to an anticipated future event.] The two terms, when we are dealing with events, are separated in time. The “event-sign” that we must “interpret” is given to us in the present, that is to say, in the only temporal mode that is real. Although there are different ways to interpret the event-sign, there nonetheless lies at the bases the unique reality of the present.

33. Pour « vouloir les événements comme ils se produisent », il faut les connaître et les comprendre, il faut les interpréter. L’homme, dit Epictète, est né « pour contempler Dieu et ses œuvres, et non seulement pour les contempler, mais encore pour les interpréter »2. Interpréter veut dire mettre en rapport. Peu importe, pour l’instant, si ce rapport est d’ordre final ou simplement causal. Il faut, en tout cas, pour qu’il puisse s’établir, deux termes au moins3. Ainsi, quand ils veulent démontrer l’ordre de la providence, les Stoïciens font voir comment les choses sont bien adaptées (ἁρμόζειν) les unes aux autres4 ; les sciences séméiologiques consistent à rapporter un signe à un signifié. Or, les deux termes, quand il s’agit d’événements, sont séparés dans le temps ; un seul, l’événement-signe, celui qu’il faut « interpréter », nous est donné dans le présent, c’est-à-dire dans le seul des trois modes temporels qui soit réel. L’interprétation, selon le niveau où elle se pratique, pourra se faire de différentes manières, mais l’on verra que, dans tous les cas, elle suppose la réalité unique du présent.

Brief summary:

The tension between words and text can appear even when there is no text. First, we suppose that we regard as symbols all elements of the comics work that serve a referential function, including images that refer or represent by means of resemblance. Symbols that show are ones that represent by means of resemblance, and symbols that tell are ones that represent by means of convention. Next, consider comics where the dialogue balloons contain pictures or icons rather than text. Here there is a tension between the contents of the balloons being both symbols that show and symbols that tell, despite the fact that these two functions cannot be reduced to one another.

 

 

 

Summary

 

[Previously we saw that there is a tension in comics between word and image, because in some sense they can be distinguished but in another sense the basis of the distinction is called into question through the interplay of these distinguished things.] [We might think that the tension between image and text can only occur when there is text. However,] “Comics can exploit the tension between picturing and writing without incorporating words per se, as the growing body of ‘mute’ or ‘pantomime’ (that is, wordless) comics attests” (133). Instead of text, these wordless comics can have “diagrammatic symbols, such as panels, speed or vector lines, and ideograms, to gloss or reinforce what’s going on in the pictures” (133). Also, the material inside word balloons can have icons instead of words (134).

Hatfield gives the example of Eric Cartier’s Flip in Paradise. Here Flip is negotiating a drug deal. Hatfield notes how balloons, by showing a decreasing amount of money, suggests haggling. Then, as the drugs take effect, the balloons crowd together and their icons’ relevance becomes hard to discern, suggesting he is losing his ability to think and communicate coherently.

Later Flip is teaching a parrot some words, but as we see, he is actually teaching the bird about killing and cooking it.

In this way, “Cartier makes ingenious use of such visual symbols to dramatize Flip’s struggles to communicate in strange lands” (Hatfield 134).

 

Hatfield notes that the pictures in the balloons can be more generic than the drawing style outside the bubbles, or they can be the same style. He cites some examples in François Avril’s and Phillipe Petit-Roulet’s Soirs de Paris, in the story “63 Rue de a Grange aux Belles,” where “elaborate pictograms [...] capture the conversations taking place at a cocktail party” (134). Hatfield then notes the range of types of pictures that appear in the balloons. There is a man who asks a number of women to dance, and in each case there are the same simple icons to show the man’s request and the woman’s subsequent rejection (134).

Or the balloon contents can appear almost exactly like they do visually in the scenes, “as when a would-be Romeo uses a series of balloons to itemize a woman’s attractive features: her eyes, breasts, legs, and so on” (134).

And also in another case, when people are discussing paintings, we see images of the works they are discussing.

Hatfield explains, “Such examples suggest that visual/verbal tension is not necessarily even a matter of playing words against pictures; it may be a matter of playing symbols against other symbols” (134). [I do not find this part absolutely clear. Some of the examples in “63 Rue de a Grange aux Belles” do not seem to me to be so obviously symbols, especially for example the paintings, because their referential function seems to be one of resemblance. Hatfield will clarify this terminology in the next section, so let us move to it.]

 

[In this next paragraph, I have the impression that Hatfield is considering all visual givens in the comics work that have a referential function as being a symbol. Then, there are symbols that are supposed to show us what is really supposed to be there in the story’s world (available for the characters to experience), and there are symbols that tell us things about what is going on in the situations. (But I am not sure that I fully grasp the correspondence between diegetic and non-diegetic with image and text. I suppose thought bubbles are non-diegetic, because the characters do not actually see those symbols floating in the air, even though the dialogue is apparent to the characters and not just to the reader.) Hatfield then says that normally symbols that show are more or less representational drawings, while symbols that tell are “words, balloons, and a few familiar icons” (134). It also seems that he is locating the tension between image and text between these two types of symbols, with images being symbols that show and text being images that tell. He then says that the difference between these two types of symbols can be blurred when we use symbols that show to function as symbols that tell, as in the examples above. Now, symbols that show use one sort of code of signification (which I suppose is reference by means of resemblance) and symbols that tell use another code of signification (which I suppose is reference by means of convention). This means that this tension that can arise between the two “may be characterized as the clash and collaboration of different codes of signification.]

Such visual/verbal tension results from the juxtaposition of symbols that function diegetically and symbols that function non-diegetically — that is, the mingling of symbols that “show” and symbols that “tell.” More precisely, we may say that symbols that show are symbols that purport to depict, in a literal way, figures and objects in the imagined world of the comic, while symbols that tell are those that offer a kind of diacritical commentary on the images, or (to use another rough metaphor) a “soundtrack” for the images. In most comics, the symbols that show are representational drawings while the symbols that tell are words, balloons, and a few familiar icons. (These icons are nonalphabetic symbols of a sort that many word processors now make available to writers: arrows, dotted lines, lightbulbs, stars, and so forth.) But the potential exists for comics creators to push this tension much further, even to incorporate representational drawings as “dialogue” and to blur the difference between alphabetic symbols and pictures. At its broadest level, then, what we call visual/verbal tension may be characterized as the clash and collaboration of different codes of signification, whether or not written words are used. Again, the deployment of such devices assumes a knowing reader.

What does isomorphism got to do with you?

We find a certain coherence in our world, and as well there is a coherence in how we represent our world. We might observe some event, like a ball smashing a window. There is a sort of causal coherence to that event. Then we might formulate a sentence to describe the event to someone else. If the description is accurate, then the description will have a logical coherence to it as well. What is remarkable is that we can move from the parts of the world to the parts of our representations. This is only possible if we designate one-to-one relations between the parts of one domain with those of the other, even though these parts do not always resemble one another, as in the case of symbolic language. This one-to-one relation between the parts of the different domains is an isomorphic relation. It is isomorphism that allows us to place our world in a symbolic medium.


Brief Summary

Peirce distinguishes three types of signs: icons, indices, and symbols. Icons resemble their referent; indices are causally imprinted by their referent, and symbols stand for their referent on account of some convention or habit of relating the two. A diagram can be an icon, because the parts of the diagram resemble the parts of the thing it represents. Symbols are made of icons, because a symbol evokes in us a mental image that resembles the symbol's referent. Because there is a one-to-one correspondence between the symbol and its proper mental icon, we can say that symbols are made of icons on account of isomorphism.


Relevance to Deleuze

Deleuze ties together the concepts of diagram, analogy, icon, symbol, isomorphism, and digital coding in the "Analogy" chapter of his Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation. His purpose is to explain his highly complex and original concept: the aesthetic analogy. The concept of isomorphism will allow him to characterize an analogous relation between an original and a production, which are related by a medium that does not resemble either one. This medium is the chance influence that deforms by means of modulation the original's parts. In this way it produces something with different parts with new relations. The parts now are incompatible. But the forces that glued the original's parts coherently together now force together the changed parts in an incoherent way. The device which causes this modulatory deformation is what Deleuze calls a diagram. He distinguishes it from Peirce's diagram, which produces similar relations of parts rather than dissimilar ones. Deleuze also speaks of how the symbol for Peirce is made of icons. The importance here is that the new modulated parts might have vague sensible resemblances to the original, although the original and the modulated part refer to different objects. So the new modulated part iconically refers to the original, even though the meanings they symbolize are incompatible. The importance of this is that the iconic relation between the original and the modulation preserves the forces that organized the original's parts, and it is these contracting forces which are pushing together the incompatible parts of the modulation. This will make more sense when we discuss Deleuze's aesthetic analogy in a forthcoming entry.

I. What is a Sign? Three Divisions of Logic


Peirce will expound his theory of signs. His synonym for sign is representamen (99a). So whenever he uses the term representamen, we may take it to mean 'sign.'

Let's look at the core components involved in his theory. Besides the sign itself is the person who is being aware of its meaning. Another component is what the sign stands for. So he defines a sign:
A sign, or representamen, is something which stands to somebody for something in some respect or capacity. (99a)
The sign 'addresses' the person involved, and creates in her mind an equivalent or more developed sign. This sign created in the addressed person's mind Peirce calls the interpretant of the first sign.

The sign stands for something else, and this other thing Peirce calls the sign's object.

Peirce also discusses the idea that is evoked by signs. The idea is just a notion that we can communicate to others and that we can conceive more than once, with the idea being mostly the same each time. This idea is the ground for the sign or representamen. This is because the sign does not entirely stand in the place of its object, but more importantly it refers to the idea involved in its meaning. (99a.b)

Thus Peirce divides the sign or representamen into three general elements: the ground [the idea related to the object], the object itself, and the interpretant [the sign in the mind of the person whom the sign addresses].

There is then a triadic relation in Peirce's theory of signs.
The (1) sign relates to (2) an object in such a way that it may evoke (3) in the person's mind the sign, the interpretant related to the first sign.

Peirce distinguishes three types of signs: icon, index, and symbol. [He will clarify in the following section]

1) Icon.
An icon refers to its object solely on account of certain characteristics that it bears. It is 'like' the thing it is a sign for. (102bc)

2) Index
An index refers to an object on account of its actually being affected by that object. The modification that the object causes to the index is what allows it to denote that object. For this reason, it may bear a similar quality to the object, and hence in a way involves a peculiar sort of icon. (102c)

3) Symbol
A symbol denotes an object on account of some law. Usually this is a law of association of general ideas. This association causes the symbol to be taken as referring to its associated object. (102d)


3. Icon, Index, and Symbol

a. Synopsis

1) Icon
Icons possess a character that makes it signify something, even if that thing does not exist. For example, a pencil-line can be an icon for a geometrical line, even though it is only like a geometrical line on account of similar characteristics, and even though geometrical lines cannot exist in actuality. (104bc)

2) Index
An index has some trait caused by the object, and this trait is what allows the index to denote that object. We may think of things that have causally affected one another, leaving their imprint, but without there being some person having a sign in their minds for this object leaving the imprint. In other words, we can remove the interpretant [idea in addressed person's mind] and still have and index, but if we remove the object [and its imprint], the index is no longer significant. Peirce's example is a piece of moulding that was shot, producing a bullet-hole. The hole would be there, regardless of whether there is someone to attribute this hole to a bullet-shot. However, were there no hole, then the moulding cannot possible refer indexically to some bullet-shot. (104bc)

3) Symbol
A symbol is a speech utterance whose signification results from it being understood to have that signification. Hence what happens is that when someone sees a symbol, she then conceives another sign in her mind that stands for the object represented both by the physical sign and the mental one. So a symbol needs an interpretant [mental sign] in order to be significant.


b. Icon

Icon's have a representative quality whose likeness to the object allows it to iconically refer to that object. In a sense, anything can substitute something else that it is like.

Peirce also calls an iconic representamen a hypoicon. A painting, taken just in terms of the resemblances to objects that it produces, is an example of a hypoicon. (105b)

There are three types of hypoicons: images, diagrams, and metaphors. An image bears simple similar qualities to its object. A diagram bears relations in its own parts that are analogous to the relations in the object's parts. A metaphor represents something by means of a parallelism in something else. (105bc)

According to Peirce, we have only one way to directly communicate an idea, and that is by means of an icon. Indirect ways must be grounded on icons. (105c)

Pictures are icons. So too are diagrams, even though there is not really a sensuous resemblance between the diagram and its object. Instead, in diagrams there is merely an analogy between the relations of the diagram's parts to the object's parts. (105d) "it is only in respect to the relations of their parts that their likeness consists." (107a)


c. Index

An index is "in dynamical (including spatial) connection both with the individual object, on the one hand, and with the senses or memory of the person for whom it serves as a sign, on the other hand" (107d).

Peirce offers some examples.
A rap on the door is an index. Anything which focuses the attention is an index. Anything which startles us is an index, in so far as it marks the junction between two portions of experience. Thus a tremendous thunderbolt indicates that something considerable happened, though we may not know precisely what the event was.
. . . A low barometer with a moist air is an index of rain; that is we suppose that the forces of nature establish a probable connection between the low barometer with moist air and coming rain. A weathercock is an index of the direction of the wind; because in the first place it really takes the self-same direction as the wind, so that there is a real connection between them, and in the second place we are so constituted that when we see a weathercock pointing in certain direction it draws our attention to that direction, and when we see the weathercock veering with the wind, we are forced by the law of mind to think that direction is connected with the wind. The pole star is an index, or pointing finger, to show us which way is north. A spirit-level, or a plumb bob, is an index of the vertical direction. (109a.c)


d. Symbol

A symbol is a sign that represents an object on account of some rule or habit determining what mental sign will be evoked in the mind of the person addressed by the symbol. (113a)

Peirce explains here how a symbol can be made of icons (as well as indices). He seems to say that the symbol needs to somehow evoke mental icons whose character refers us to the represented object.
A man walking with a child points his arm up into the air and says, "There is a balloon." The pointing arm is an essential part of the symbol without which the latter would convey no information. But if the child asks, "What is a balloon," and the man replies, "It is something like a great big soap bubble," he makes the image a part of the symbol. (112bc)
He further explains how symbols refer to mental icons.
A Symbol is a sign naturally fit to declare that the set of objects | which is denoted by whatever set of indices may be in certain ways attached to it is represented by an icon associated with it. To show what this complicated definition means, let us take as an example of a symbol the word "loveth." Associated with this word is an idea, which is the mental icon of one person loving another. Now we are to understand that "loveth" occurs in a sentence; for what it may mean by itself, if it means anything, is not the question. Let the sentence, then, be "Ezekiel loveth Huldah." Ezekiel and Huldah must, then, be or contain indices; for without indices it is impossible to designate what one is talking about. Any mere description would leave it uncertain whether they were not mere characters in a ballad; but whether they be so or not, indices can designate them. Now the effect of the word "loveth" is that the pair of objects denoted by the pair of indices Ezekiel and Huldah is represented by the icon, or the image we have in our minds of a lover and his beloved. Of reasoning in general


In another text he offers another example of how symbols refer to mental icons whose character points to that object that the icon resembles.
in the proposition, "A sells B to C for the price D," A, B, C, D form a set of four indices. The symbol "___ sells ___ to ___ for the price ___" refers to a mental icon, or idea, of the act of sale, and declares that this image represents the set A, B, C, D, | considered as attached to that icon, A as seller, C as buyer, B as object sold, and D as price. [20-21, boldface mine]

So we see that symbols are composed of icons. Now we need to understand why Deleuze says that this composition is based on "phenomena of isomorphism." We will look more closely at this passage:
In his great semiological theory, Peirce first defined icons by similitude, and symbols by a conventional rule. But he acknowledged that conventional symbols are composed of icons (by virtue of phenomena of isomorphism), and that pure icons range far beyond qualitative similitude, and consist of "diagrams." [ft.5: "In his theory of the sign, Peirce attaches great importance to the analogical function and to the notion of the diagram. Nonetheless, he reduces the diagram to a similitude of relations." (citations), p.137b] (Deleuze 81c)

We will first look at what makes an isomorphism, first in a somewhat technical manner. Consider two sets:
Set X's members: 1, 2, 3, 4
Set Y's members: A, B, C, D
We will then say that there is a function involved. Recall Edwards' & Penney's "Function Machine":

A function is like a machine that takes-in one value and gives-out another. In the case of our isomorphism, we will say that there is a function that takes-in members of the first set, and gives-out members of the other set. If we take-in '1' and give out 'D', we would represent this as:

We see that the assignments are arbitrary. We also notice that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the elements of the sets (Landsberg 58). This is like how the symbols we use are arbitrary, but refer according to conventions or habits. The convention or habit of association, then, is the function that makes the two domains isomorphic to one another. So we call that thing which is like a great soap bubble a "balloon", because that is the convention. And as we noted before, for Peirce, the symbol evokes a mental icon for the object. So there is something like a 'function' which takes in the symbol, and gives out the mental icon. It is perhaps in this way that Deleuze means symbols are composed of icons by virtue of phenomena of isomorphism. The symbols would be meaningless if they did not isomorphically relate to mental icons that directly refer to objects similar to them.

This then will help us understand how Deleuze means "analogy by isomorphism," when talking about digital coding. Let's take binary as an example of digital coding. There are two abstract elements, the one and the zero. [Perhaps they are abstract, because these numerals refer to discrete machine states, and thus the coding is something like an abstraction for the machine state; that is, its switches or whatever else are either in one or another position.]

Deleuze writes that we may "do at least three things with a code. One can make an intrinsic combination of abstract elements." (Deleuze 80c) So with our 1 and our 0, we may for example combine them to obtain:

Deleuze continues, "One can also make a combination which will yield a 'message' or a 'narrative', that is, which will have an isomorphic relation to a referential set." (Deleuze 80c) So let's take our binary string as an example. We can for example break it into 8-bit parts.

Then, we can establish something like an isomorphic function to tell us how to convert these symbol-groups into letters. [Using the ASCII convention, we might say]

[This example is taken from: docdroppers.org] In this way, our string "0100100001100101011011000110110001101111" can be converted into "Hello," on account of the isomorphism of the sets. In fact, the original string was composed intentionally for this translation. Deleuze then writes, "Finally, one can code the extrinsic elements in such a way that they would be reproduced in an autonomous manner by the intrinsic elements of the code (in portraits produced by a computer, for instance, and in every instance where one could speak of "making a shorthand of figuration.)" (Deleuze 80c) The intrinsic elements seem in our case to be the 8-bit arrangements. And the extrinsic elements would be the letters. Computer software, running on the basis of binary codes, can automatically convert these binary sequences to the letters on our screens, just like how they convert the binary data of an image file to a picture we can see. So first we begin with "Hello" or some image. That is then converted to binary numerical codes for the letters or the homogenized square regions (pixels) of the image. The computer than by means of its own processes reproduces that original word or image, all mediated by the numerical code.

Notice how there is no resemblance between the letter formation and its isomorphic binary equivalent. And likewise with Deleuze's example, there is no resemblance between an image file's binary sequence and the image the software autonomously reproduces on our screen. Nonetheless, it is by means of this automatic reproduction that the resemblance to the original is produced, all through a medium, binary code, that bears no resemblance to the thing it codes and reproduces. But the thing it reproduces is similar to the thing that was originally rendered into code, so in a way the product is analogous to the original. Deleuze writes: "It seems, then, that a digital code covers certain forms of similitude or analogy: analogy by isomorphism, or analogy by produced resemblance" (80d).


Finally let's make one remark regarding Deleuze's observation that for Peirce, diagrams can be icons. This is because the relations of the diagram resemble the relations of the object it represents. Deleuze contrasts his own notion of diagram with Peirce's. We will see in a forthcoming entry that for Deleuze, a diagram regards something with relations that do not resemble the original's relations.

Previously Bergson explained that ideas on the deepest level are not exchangeable, symbolically mediated genera, but are continuously-altering processes. Because they are continuously heterogeneous, each moment of an idea is different from its neighbors, even though we normally group many such contiguous moments together into one concept. This means also an idea is not made up internally of logically related parts. Ideas proceed in the same manner that images in dreams or the imagination melt into one another.


§84 By Separating Our Conscious States We Promote Social Life, but Raise Problems Soluble Only by Recourse to the Concrete and Living Self

Bergson will now verify and illustrate his main point in this section: "conscious life displays two aspects according as we perceive it directly or by refraction through space" (137b). Our deepest conscious states "have no relation to quantity, they are pure quality; they intermingle in such a way that we cannot tell whether they are one or several, nor even examine them form this point of view without at once altering their nature" (137b). Because we cannot tease the states apart, the "duration which they thus create is a duration whose moments do not constitute a numerical multiplicity: to characterize these moments by saying that they encroach on one another would still be to distinguish them" (137c).

[Recall from §57 the example of the bell toll. No tolls are concurrent. However, to count them, our minds might place symbolic tokens for each one in ideal space so that they may be grouped together at once and counted. Also recall from §82 how our feelings are complex multiplicities. When we assign a word for them, we strip them of their heterogeneous and durational character, objectifying them in a way.] Bergson wonders about this situation: we live just a purely individual life without language or society. Would our consciousness then be able to grasp its series of inner states in their unbroken form? Bergson says that we will still interact and perceive the objective exterior world. It gives us the idea of homogeneous space in which objects may be sharply differentiated. [Recall the pendulum example from §68. The pendulum is never in two places at the same time. That is to say, the different moments of the pendulum's swing never coincide. But the moments of our conscious duration do interpenetrate. And, we are conscious of the pendulum. We then correlate moments of our interpenetrating mental states with the non-interpenetrating positions of the pendulum. As a result, we think we are able to distinguish mental states according to external spatial differences, even though mental events are entirely non-spatial. Hence] another reason why we would make use of homogeneous space is "because it is too convenient to set out in such a medium the somewhat cloudy states which first attract the attention of consciousness, in order to resolve them into simpler terms" (137-138).

So regardless we distort our experience of our own inner states by projected them into homogeneous space. This is the basis for our social life. Animals probably do not also "picture to themselves, beside their sensations, as we do, an external world quite distinct from themselves, which is the common property of all conscious beings" (138a). We form clear pictures of the external world of objects as well as their homogeneous spatial medium. Our tendency to do so is the same as our impulse to "live in common and to speak" (138d). And the more we come to socialize, the more we abstract our inner states into objects or things. In this way, "they break off not only from one another, but from ourselves" (138bc). From that point on, "we no longer perceive them except in the homogeneous medium in which we have set their image, and through the word which lends them its commonplace colour" (138c).

In this way, we create second self. Its existence is "made up of distinct moments, whose states are separated from one another and easily expressed in words" (138c). On the one hand, we might be inclined to say there are two selves. Perhaps there is the self who primarily experiences its inner states as continuously heterogeneous, and this self might be opposed to the self who differentiates these states into distinct parts laid-out as symbolic tokens in homogeneous idea space. But when we concentrate our attention on these discretely distinguished states, we see that they "melt into one another like the crystals of a snow-flake when touched for some time with the finger" / "se fondre entre eux comme des aiguilles de neige au contact prolongé de la main" (138-139/105c). Bergson explains that the self who primarily experiences its mental continuity and the self who watches the artificially divided states re-merge are both the very same self. Yet we keep to our distinguished states for the sake of social interaction.

Bergson now considers a superficial sort of psychology. It is concerned with the states as artificially divided. [Because these states are anchored into real inner states], this sort of method might not fall into error. However, such a psychology is dealing with static mental states. So when it wants to understand the dynamics of these states, it is limited only to the "association of terms which are distinct from one another and are set side by side in a homogeneous medium" (139). Hence it would describe the concrete and living self under this framework. But when it does so, it will continue to encounter difficulties [because this is a distortion of the real, fundamental dynamics of the creations of states]. These difficulties will demonstrate the absurdity "of the fundamental hypothesis by which it spreads out time in space and puts succession at the very centre of simultaneity" (139d).

Later, Bergson will explain that this is the source of the contradictions implied in the problems of causality, freedom, and personality. And, if we wish to rid ourselves of these problems, we need to "go back to the real and concrete self and give up its symbolical substitute" (139d).

Previously Bergson explained how words fix our fleeting sensations. Language allows us to group distinct experiences under one heading, for practical purposes. Yet doing so distorts the irreducible uniqueness of each experienced moment.


§82 How Analysis and Description Distort the Feelings

Our immediate consciousness is most distorted when we apply language to our feelings. An emotion is never so simple that one word could describe it.

A violent love or a deep melancholy takes possession of our soul: here we feel a thousand different elements which dissolve into and permeate one another without any precise outlines, without the least tendency to externalize themselves in relation to one another; hence their originality. We distort them as soon as we distinguish a numerical multiplicity in their confused mass: what will it be, then, when we set them out, isolated from one another, in this homogeneous medium which may be called either time or space, whichever you prefer? A moment ago each of them was borrowing an indefinable colour from its surroundings: now we have it colourless, and ready to accept a name. The feeling itself is a being which lives and develops and is therefore constantly changing (132bc-133)

Complex emotions are alive because they develop throughout a duration whose heterogeneous moments permeate one another. But when we distinguish these originally continuously states and assign words to them, we deprive them of their true life.

By separating these moments from each other, by spreading out time in space, we have caused this feeling to lose its life and its colour. Hence, we are now standing before our own shadow: we believe that we have analysed our feeling, while we have really replaced it by a juxtaposition of lifeless states which can be translated into words, and each of which constitutes the common element, the impersonal residue, of the impressions felt in a given case by the whole of society. (133b)

[Consider how we might attribute the weather to our moods.] After rendering our complex emotions into simple generalities, we may later apply logic to them to produce deductions (133c).

Bergson now has us consider a hypothetical novelist. She writes in such a way that her book breaks down our categories and causes us to see "under this appearance of logic a fundamental absurdity, under this juxtaposition of simple states an infinite permeation of a thousand different impressions which have already ceased to exist the instant they are named" (133d). Bergson [writing in France, 1888 or so] is aware of no such novelist. Any such writer Bergson knows "spreads out our feeling in a homogeneous time, and expresses its elements by words" (133-134). By doing so, she "is only offering us its shadow" (134a). And nonetheless, the writer uses her talents to point us to the deeper level of pure conscious duration.

but he has arranged this shadow in such a way as to make us suspect the extraordinary and illogical nature of the object which projects it; he has made us reflect by giving outward expression to something of that contradiction, that interpenetration, which is the very essence of the elements expressed. Encouraged by him, we have put aside for an instant the veil which we interposed between our consciousness and ourselves. He has brought us back into our own presence. (134b)
