Brief summary:

For the Stoics, there are two modes of temporality. {1} There is the time of the actual present, and this present exists and has some limited extensive duration. And {2} there is the unlimited time reaching infinitely into the past and future, with the division between the two being the present as an infinitely divided, mathematical instant. While Chrysippus did not make a terminological distinction despite speaking of time in each of these senses, Marcus Aurelius does in fact distinguish them terminologically by calling the eternal, infinite sort of time “αἰών”. He uses this notion to make the point that in the context of eternal time, our life is but an insignificant finite interval, and so we should not be troubled too much in life, given its ultimate insignificance. Now, aiôn-time (including both the limitless past and future and the infinitely divided mathematical instant that is the “present” and the limit between the two) is incorporeal and thus irreal, while the lived, specious present that we know by our senses is the real corporeal present.

[In sum: There are two senses of time. There is time as infinitely extending into the past and future. It is irreal, in that rather than existing like corporeals do, it subsists as an incorporeal. And there is another time, that of the actual present. This time is real and exists. The present is a limit to the infinite time, just as place is a limit to the unlimited void.]

 

We thus cannot draw Proclus’ conclusion that all this argumentation tends to deny the reality of time, namely, that since time is never actual, it therefore does not exist. This is only true however for the past and the future [which are said to “subsist” rather than exist, and thus have a sort of irreality to them, even though they have a “somethinghood”]. But the present does exist and is actual. This makes their theory of time analogous to their theory of space, as is seen in the following diagram:

[I have not read the part on place and void yet, so I cannot decipher the diagram right now. But in a previous section on this topic, Goldschmidt examines the following Stobaeus quotation:

Stobaeus I:161,8-26. SVF 2.503, part:

The void is said to be infinite. For what is outside the world is like this, but place is finite since no body is infinite. Just as anything corporeal is finite, so the incorporeal is infinite, for time and void are infinite. For as nothing is no limit, so there is no limit of nothing, as is the case with the void. In respect of its own subsistence it is infinite; it is made finite by being filled, but once that which fills it has been removed, a limit to it cannot be thought of.

In the French:

« On dit que le vide est in fini ; car tel est le vide en dehors du monde ; le lieu, en revanche, est limité, étant donné qu’aucun corps n’est infini. Perhaps Goldschmidt is describing the following structure with his diagram, but this is a preliminary guess. The void has no limit. It is incorporeal, and it has no element of place in it. But when it is filled by something, that something is corporeal, is limited, and has place. We have a similar structure with time. There is time understood as unlimited at both its extremities of the past and the future. It is incorporeal and has no real moments in it, thus it has no real temporal “places” filling it. But a real present can come to be said to have a location associable with the unlimited time. Such a present is limited, corporeal, and has temporal “place”.] [Let me note something about place in infinite time. We can say that if it is linear, it has determinate places along the line, as some come before others. Thus we might want to say that infinite time has temporal “place” to it. And so we might designate one part as coming before another. But at best these temporal places could only be relative to one another and not have an assigned place on the continuum. This is because there is no first or last moment that would orient all the rest. Perhaps we might designate some point as the present and use that as the point of origin to give determinate place to all the rest. I am not certain. It could also be that infinite time has no such present, because the present is real and time is irreal. In other words, this kind of time seems to have order without place. Imagine designating a point in this line of time, and speaking of that point’s “place”. But under consideration that there is infinitely much coming before it, we might imagine that place shifting forward in relation to it, as if getting pushed further into the future in the context of a past that fills up further into the past. In the context of the infinite future, we might think of its place shifting backward into the past under that relation. It is somewhat dizzying to think of a moment’s place in an infinite stretch. Let me put it another way. Suppose we designate a moment in infinite time. We might think that any such moment stands in the exact middle of the line, because going forward and back from it are infinities. But this holds for any point on the line. Thus every point is right in the middle of time and so none would have any ultimate place. A moment can have place in relation to another moment (being so much before or after it), but a moment cannot have place in relation to time itself. And even the relative place is not secure, because neither of the two related points in time have an ultimate place on the line, so their interval has no place in the same way either point has no place.]

On ne saurait donc dire, à la suite de Proclus, que « toute cette argumentation tend ... à nier la réalité du temps : il n’est jamais actuel et par conséquent n’existe pas »3. [In sum: The Stoic notion of time as extending infinitely to the past and future is seen implicitly in Chrysippus’ definition of time in its two senses, but it is given terminological distinction by Marcus Aurelius, who calls it αἰών. He speaks of how our life is a limited interval (similar to a broadened present) set within an infinite gulf of the limitless past and future of the αἰών. In comparison to eternity, our life is of infinitesimal significance, and so we should not over-dramatize the difficulties in our life.]

 

This Stoic theory of time [with its two senses, namely, {1} an irreal, unlimited time extending infinity into the past and future and {2} a real limited time of the actual present] would have been as intelligible as their theory of void and place had Chrysippus used two terms for time to designate the two types of temporality. But perhaps Chrysippus thought this distinction was already obvious, given that it is more or less a distinction between the present on the one hand and the past and future on the other hand. Also, he does suggest this distinction when saying that “time is spoken of in two senses” (Inwood and Gerson 2008: 88. In the French: “Le temps se prend dans deux acceptions”). But even if we insist that Chrysippus was imprecise, we nonetheless find the conceptual distinction given a proper terminological distinction in Marcus Aurelius. He speaks of an infinite time, corresponding to the void, and he calls it αἰών, normally translated by “eternity” (“éternité”). To see the origin and development of the term αἰών, we can look to Onians’ The Origins of European Thought: About the Body, the Mind, the Soul, the World, Time and Fate. (See this entry: Selections on Aion and Chronos [Αἰών; Χρόνος] in Onians’ Origins of European Thought). There we learn that “αἰών” referred to the “vital liquid” and came to mean “life-time”, “period of time”, and then “eternity” [see page 251: This conception of Χρόνος, the usual meaning of which is ‘Time’, may be related to that of αἰών, which was not only the procreative life-fluid with which the ψυχή was identified, the spinal marrow believed to take serpent form, but also came to mean ‘lifetime’, ‘period of time’ and so ‘eternity’.”] But, as Goldschmidt notes, this means that [although it means eternity] it also means the limitation that the Stoics reserved for present time. [I am not certain, but perhaps Goldschmidt is saying that αἰών originally referred to the limited, durational, specious present and then later evolved to mean eternity.] Goldschmidt cites the following places where Marcus Aurelius uses αἰών.

 

Meditations IV, 3:

 

ἀλλὰ τὸ δοξάριόν σε περισπάσει; ἀπιδὼν εἰς τὸ τάχος τῆς πάντων λήθης καὶ τὸ χάος τοῦ ἐφ᾽ ἑκάτερα ἀπείρου αἰῶνος καὶ τὸ κενὸν τῆς ἀπηχήσεως καὶ τὸ εὐμετάβολον καὶ ἄκριτον τῶν εὐφημεῖν δοκούντων καὶ τὸ στενὸν τοῦ τόπου, ἐν ᾧ περιγράφεται: ὅλη τε γὰρ ἡ γῆ στιγμὴ καὶ ταύτης πόστον γωνίδιον ἡ κατοίκησις αὕτη; καὶ ἐνταῦθα πόσοι καὶ οἷοί τινες οἱ ἐπαινεσόμενοι;

Or shall the little affair of character and glory disturb you, when you reflect how all things shall be involved in oblivion; and the vast immensity of eternal duration on both sides; how empty the noisy echo of applauses; how fickle and injudicious the applauders; how narrow the bounds within which our praise is confined: the earth itself but as a point in the universe: and how small a corner of it the part inhabited: and, even there, how few are they, and of how little worth, who <92> are to praise us!

But will that paltry thing, Fame, pluck thee aside? Look at the swift approach of complete forgetfulness, | and the void of infinite time on this side of us and on that, and the empty echo of acclamation, and the fickleness and uncritical judgment of those who claim to speak well of us, and the narrowness of the arena to which all this is confined. For the whole earth is but a point, and how tiny a corner of it is this the place of our sojourning! and how many therein and of what sort are the men who shall praise thee!

But perhaps the desire of the thing called fame will torment thee. – See how soon everything is forgotten, and look at the chaos of infinite time on each side of [the present], and the emptiness of applause, and the changeableness and want of judgement in those who pretend to give praise, and the narrowness of the space within which it is circumscribed [and be quiet at last]. For the whole earth is a point, and how small a nook in it is this thy dwelling, and how few are there in it, and what kind of people are they who will praise thee.

Here we see that αἰών [αἰῶνος] is used to mean the infinite time extending both into the past and into the future. Goldschmidt then cross references the Stobaeus/Arius text we have been often referring to [see especially section 1.1.3.10].

While the term αἰών is not used here, we see the same structure of time being infinite both into the past and future. Goldschmidt then cites Meditations 12, 7.

As we see, here αἰών [αἰῶνος] refers to a time that spans infinitely into the past and future. Goldschmidt also notes that in this quote, that aiôn-time and inert matter are understood in the sense of the “whole”. [I am not exactly what he means here. Maybe he is saying that the aiôn-time is incorporeal, but has a whole, just as inert matter and its present time, is a whole; or otherwise that the aiôn-time makes a whole in its combination with inert matter (and its present temporality).] We look next at Meditations 12, 32:

How tiny a fragment of the boundless abyss of Time has been appointed to each man! For in a moment it is lost in eternity. And how tiny a part of the Universal Substance! How tiny of the Universal Soul! And on how tiny a clod of the whole Earth dost thou crawl! Keeping all these things in mind, think nothing of moment save to do what thy nature leads thee to do, and to bear what the Universal Nature brings thee.

How small a part of the boundless and unfathomable time is assigned to every man? for it is very soon swallowed up in the eternal. And how small a part of the whole substance? and how small a part of the universal soul? and on what a small clod of the whole earth thou creepest? Reflecting on all this consider nothing to be great, except to act as thy nature leads thee, and to endure that which the common nature brings.

Here we see the present-eternal in its part-whole relation, for we are appointed a small part of matter in the infinitely immense duration of αἰών [αἰῶνος]. The next reference is Meditations 5, 24:

In these we note the idea of the finite interval (διάστημα / “intervalle”) of our life within the infinite span of aion-time. On this topic of the finite interval (διάστημα) of our life falling between the infinite gulf of past and future, he cross-references Meditations 4, 50:

‘Tis a vulgar meditation, and yet a very effectual one, for enabling us to despise death; to consider the fate of those who have been most earnestly tenacious of life, and enjoyed it longest. What have they obtained more than those who died early? They are all lying dead some where or other. Caedicianus, Fabius, Julian, Lepidus, and such like, who carried out the corpses of multitudes, have been carried out <111> themselves. In sum, how small is the difference of time! and that spent amidst how many troubles! among what worthless men! and in what a mean carcase! Don’t think it of consequence. Look backward on the immense antecedent eternity, and forward into another immensity. How small is the difference between a life of three days, and of three ages like Nestor’s?

An unphilosophical, but none the less an effective, help to the contemning of death is to tell over the names of those who have clung long and tenaciously to life. How are they better off than those who were cut off before their time? After all, they lie buried somewhere at last, Cadicianus, Fabius, Julianus, Lepidus, and any others like them, who after carrying many to their graves were at last carried to their own Small, in any point of view, is the difference in length, and that too lived out to the dregs amid what great cares and with what sort of companions and in what kind of a body! Count it then of no consequence. For look at the yawning gulf of Time behind thee, and before thee at another Infinity to come. In this Eternity the life of a baby of three days and the life of a Nestor of three centuries are as one.

It is a vulgar, but still a useful help towards contempt of death, to pass in review those who have tenaciously stuck to life. What more then have they gained than those who have died early? Certainly they lie in their tombs somewhere at last, Cadicianus, Fabius, Julianus, Lepidus, or any one else like them, who have carried out many to be buried and then were carried out themselves. Altogether the interval is small [between birth and death]; and consider with how much trouble, and in company with what sort of people and in what a feeble body this interval is laboriously passed. Do not then consider life a thing of any value. For look to the immensity of time behind thee, and to the time which is before thee, another boundless space. In this infinity then what is the difference between him who lives three days and him who lives three generations?

[In section 1.1.3.10, we examined a quotation in Stobaeus that is paraphrasing (or quoting) Chrysippus on the topic of time. Chrysippus first defines time as the interval of movement in the sense of measuring speed and slowness. Then in section 1.1.3.11, we looked at how Aristotle understands this idea of time being the number that measures motion.] We needed to examine the Aristotle material in order to understand the first sentence of our text [about Chrysippus’ philosophy of time.] There is a discrepancy. Chrysippus says that time is the interval of movement, while Aristotle says time is the number of movement. Chrysippus’ substitution likely resulted from the desire to make the definition of time harmonize with the definition of place. [I do not know exactly what this is referring to, but consider this quotation from Sextus Empiricus about the Stoic’s view on place: “Place is what is occupied by an existent and made equal to what occupies it (by ‘existent they now mean body, as is clear from the interchange of names). And they say that room is an interval partly occupied by a body and partly unoccupied.” (Against the professors 10.3-4 (SVF 2.505, part) in Long & Sedley I, p.294.] However, we should note that the mathematical aspect of time does not seem preserved. [Perhaps the idea is that unlike in Aristotle where time is something that gives quantifying measure, for the Stoics it does not have that feature. But I am not sure what is meant here.] Instead of the mathematical conceptions we see in previous theories of time, here we have a dynamic vitalism. [Perhaps that dynamic vitalism of time as an interval is something like time is a block of activity, rather than a quantifying qualification of motion. But again, I am not sure.] This opposition between the mathematical and dynamic-vitalistic conceptions is seen in the [Stoic] thesis that in time all things move and exist. However, for Aristotle, eternal beings are not in time; for, they are not enveloped by time; their existence is not measured by time. [The distinction is not so obvious to me yet. It seems to be that for the Stoics, there are no beings which are atemporal, but for Aristotle there are, namely, eternal beings, which exist but cannot be measured by time.] This is because for the Stoics, there are no beings which are not active bodies. But we note that the Stoics adopt an Aristotle-like formulation, that time is the measure of speed and slowness. [(See the quotation below, as I do not quite grasp this next point well. It might be: as such, the Stoics adopt Aristotle’s notion that movement and time are reciprocally determined, rather than giving time as number the priority and primacy over physical movement.]

[In sum: Zeno of Citium had a competing definition for time, namely, that it is the interval of any movement whatsoever. But Chrysippus’ definition, that time is more specifically the interval of the movement of the world, is the Stoic definition that prevailed.]

 

But we now wonder, what movement is time the interval of? Chrysippus’ response to this question appears to be at odds with that of Zeno. Simplicius says that Zeno the Stoic defined time as the interval of any movement whatever. This definition is unlike Chrysippus’: time is the interval of the movement of the world. Simplicius elaborates: he [Zeno? Chrysippus?] does not combine two definitions into one [but I am not sure what that would mean. Perhaps we might rectify them by saying that the only movements are those of the world]; rather, he establishes one formula against the contrary formulations [or critiques: “négations”] of the other Stoics. Arius Didymus confirms this first clause. Regarding the second clause, the “négations” come in part from among the other Stoics. But Chrysippus’ definition seems to have prevailed, because Apollodorus and Diogenes Laertius say that for the Stoics, time, an incorporeal, is the interval of the movement of the world.

[In sum: Aristotle comes to define time as a regular circular motion (like the sun’s daily circular motion dividing the stars’ yearly circular motion so to measure out units of days and years. Since these units are intervals, that makes Chrysippus’ definition of time as the interval of motion not too dissimilar from Aristotle’s. And heaven’s motion as the standard against which all other motions are measured is responsible for the “unit” [or the “unity”] of time, because all times and motions are ultimately measured by means of the one standard motion, thereby unifying all motions/times and in doing so producing standardized units of time.)]

 

Chrysippus’ innovation [of unifying time around a cosmic motion] can be seen as analogous to Aristotle’s theory. Since in the end Aristotle’s theory construes time as a regular circular motion on account of the number of its motion being the most known, we obtain what we would today call the unit [or the unity] of time. [I do not follow that point, but let us look at it. In the cited Aristotle Physics passages, we have:

Now there is such a thing as locomotion, and in locomotion there is included circular movement, and everything is measured by some one thing homogeneous with it, units by a unit, horses by a horse, and similarly times by some definite time, and, as we said, time is measured by motion as well as motion by time (this being so because by a motion definite in time the quantity both of the motion and of the time is measured): if, then, what is first is the measure of everything homogeneous with it, regular circular motion is above all else the measure, because the number of this is the best known. Now neither alteration nor increase nor coming into being can be regular, but locomotion can be. This also is why time is thought to be the movement of the sphere, viz. because the other movements are measured by this, and time by this movement.

As far as I gather without having worked through Aristotle’s text, the argument seems to be that with motion we measure time (and likewise with time we measure motion.) The motion of the heavens is regular and circular, which provides a standard of motion against which other motions are measured. (There is no mention of the heavens in this part of the Aristotle text. I make that association by means of the Goldschmidt text at footnote 2 and the Bréhier text it cites. Here is a portion:

So “the sphere” ((τῆς σφαίρας (ἡ σφαῖρᾰ))) would seem to be the heavenly sphere, as far as I can tell, but this is not yet absolutely clear to me in the Aristotle text, but it is more apparent to me in the Bréhier text.) So given the intimate relation between motion and time, when we compare the heavenly motions against others, we also are measuring times. If I would pose my own example, I would first think of the stars’ circular movement throughout the year. We compare the stars’ regular motion to the sun’s (or to the stars’) daily motion, and we obtain a ratio of something like daily 365 sun rotations for every yearly star rotation. That gives us not just a measure of motion, where we see that one movement is so much briefer (or perhaps seemingly “faster”) than the other, but it also divides the time of the star-motion into 365 parts. In other words, the circular return of the stars has a certain duration, and the circular return of the sun has another duration, and since both motions are regular, we can take one motion’s duration as a unit of measure to quantify the other. And similarly the sun’s daily motion is further divided into hour clock-hand rotations whose regular movements count 24 rotations per sun rotation, and there are 60 rotations per hour for the minute-hand and 60 per minute for the second-hand. (I am not sure why the heavenly motion’s number is said to be the most “known”. Why is the number of the sun’s motion not the most known? I wonder if the idea has anything to do with the fact that the only regular motion with a longer duration would be the processional movement, which takes many thousands of years and thus is only known mathematically and not by experience. But I suppose there are planetary movements that are longer than a year.) And this is how we today understand a “unit” of time (which is conceived in terms of a unity of motions/times). Then bringing this back to Goldschmidt’s point, maybe the idea is that for the Stoics, the “interval” of motion would be similar to a smaller movement carved out of the larger cosmic movement and metrically reunified with  it to obtain a durational measure given in standardized units. But I am not sure.]

[The Non-Mathematical Sense of the Stoic Unit (or Unity) of Time and the Non-Opposition between Chrysippus’ and Zeno’s Theories of Time]

[In sum: The unit (or unity) in the Stoic theory does not have primarily a mathematical meaning, like it does in Aristotle’s. Also, it could be that Chrysippus’ theory is not really in opposition to Zeno’s.]

 

So although there is in a sense a unit [or a unity] in the Stoic theory of time that is more or less analogous to the unit [or the unity] of time in Aristotle’s theory, it must not be understood as having primarily a mathematical meaning. [I am not certain what is the non-mathematical sense of the unit or unity in the Stoic theory of time. Recall from section 1.1.3.10 Chrysippus’ definition of time: “Chrysippus says that time is the interval of motion according to which the measure of speed and slowness is sometimes spoken of; or, time is the interval which accompanies the motion of the cosmos” (Inwood and Gerson 2008: 88.) Perhaps we should understand the intervals more in terms of the composition of the unified motion (being unified but carvable into smaller particular movements) rather then as a mathematical entity like a numerical ratio. But I am really not sure.] And we also wonder, is Chrysippus’ addition to Zeno’s formula of time really in opposition to it? For, can we not say that Chrysippus retains Zeno’s definition, but merely adds to it? [Recall from section 1.1.3.12.2 above that Zeno defined time as the interval of any movement whatsoever, while Chrysippus defines it more specifically as the interval of the movement of the world. I am not sure, but maybe the idea Goldschmidt has in mind here is that since the interval of movement of the world measures all other movements whatsoever (or is otherwise bound up with them intimately), that it is still keeping the sense of Zeno’s definition, but only giving more specifics.]

The problem of rectifying Aristotle’s divergent theses is resolved by means of his hierarchy of the sciences. (I am not sure what is meant here. It might have something to do with what was said in section 1.1.3.11.2. The idea might be that the definition of time understood in its cosmological or theological sense is to take precedence over its physical sense. But I am not sure.) But the Stoics have a homogenous system (perhaps meaning that there is no such hierarchy of sciences for them), and this problem of rectifying Zeno’s and Chrysippus’ theories of time boils down to the more general problem of the relationship between monism and pluralism.]

Since all motions obtain their temporal traits by relation to this cosmic time, we have both a plurality of particular motions, all of which being ultimately absorbed into a singular cosmic motion, on account of their mutually binding temporal relationality.]

 

At the end of the Chrysippus text that we are examining (see section 1.1.3.10), he provides the example of walking. [Recall the end part of the quotation:

Consequently no time is present exactly, but it is broadly said to be so. (4) He also says that only the present belongs; the past and the future subsist, but belong in no way, just as only predicates {κατηγορήματα} which are [actual] attributes {συμβεβηκότα} are said to belong, for instance, walking around belongs to me when I am walking around, but it does not belong when I am lying down or sitting.

And quoting Goldschmidt on that part:

Thus the world, which is to be understood as a system, is unified as a result of the collaboration and harmony between the things in the heavens and the things on earth [from Diogenes Laertius: “the sympathy and tension which binds together things in heaven and earth”.] Thus what explains Chrysippus’ definition of time is his desire for unification, and not so much an interest in establishing a unit of measure. As we have noted before, his effort to unite [the motions under a common cosmic time] without confusing them responds to an essential requirement of the system. Thus, since Zeno, the Stoics claimed there was but one cause, namely, God. And Seneca criticized the other philosophers, Plato and Aristotle especially, for resorting to a host of causes without having any real need to do so. Yet, Seneca says “We, however, are looking now for the primary and generic cause” (Letters on Ethics, 65,12, p.187); but the Stoics are never content with this too general assertion. As they wanted to explain phenomena in detail, they were always led to push even further their analysis of the future, to multiply the distinctions, and to thereby to incur Alexander of Aphrodisias’ criticism that they produced a swarm of causes, which they listed. We note in passing that the opposition here is not at all between theology and physics, but between monism and pluralism. We find the same “structure” in the subject of virtue, which the Stoics claim was unified while at the same time they diversify the concrete modalities to the point of having generated, as Plutarch puts it, a swarm of virtues.

The Still of Time: A-Temporal Phenomena in the Duration of Deleuze’s Bergson

The Still of Time:
A-Temporal Phenomena in the Duration of Deleuze’s Bergson


Deleuze is often considered an anti-phenomenologist. Yet my sense is that his critique of phenomenology is more of a constructive critique. Deleuze is not against the project of studying phenomenal appearances; he merely does so on the basis of different principles and methods. Namely, Deleuze seems interested mostly in the phenomenality of phenomena. Phenomenologists, however, often turn their attention to how phenomenal appearances become constituted throughout the flow of our internal time consciousness. But for Deleuze, a phenomenon is a flash. It could appear instantaneously. What we will explore is the possibility that a Deleuzean phenomenology need not appeal to a flow of time consciousness in order to account for the production of phenomena.

This endeavor is inspired by an article that phenomenologist Michael Kelly wrote, where he defends Husserl’s time consciousness against Deleuzean-Bergsonists. These critics charge that Husserl’s theory of internal time cannot “accommodate time’s fundamental characteristic, namely its passage.” . Yet, Kelly shows that Husserl’s later writings on temporality are immune to this critique.

We might note how Deleuze famously said of his Bergsonism book that it is a classic instance of his buggering technique. He writes, “I imagined myself getting onto the back of an author, and giving him a child, which would be his and which would at the same time be a monster. It is very important that it should be his child, because the author actually had to say everything that I made him say. But it also had to be a monster because it was necessary to go through all kinds of decenterings, slips, break ins, secret emissions, which I really enjoyed.”

So what we will explore is the possibility that one such conceptual offspring is a surprising interpretation of Bergson’s duration: for Deleuze, duration’s fundamental characteristic is not its flowing passage. Perhaps we might characterize duration by employing terms with more of an a-temporal connotation, like instantaneous, simultaneous, and eternal. But these provisional characterizations should really only serve to avert our attention away from time’s flow in order to focus more on time in its absolute immediacy.

To do this, let’s first examine Bergson’s expanding circuit diagram.



Bergson uses it to illustrate the way that the past is always contemporaneous with the present. He first has us consider what he calls an ‘after image’. They are always a part of our perception.



We look at some object, then abruptly avert our gaze to another place. For a split-second, the image of the initial object will carry-into and overlay-upon the new scene we see. The prior object remains in our field of perception, even though it is actually no longer there. Instead, it is virtually there.



The virtual past image inserts itself so thoroughly into the new actual image that “we are no longer able to discern what is perception and what is memory.” Perhaps this is why fast moving objects leave a blurry trail behind them.

According to Bergson, just while the perceived image is sent to our brain, the most recent image in our memory has already arrived-upon and overlaid our current perception, with both moving lightning fast in a continuous circuit.



But just as soon as we see something, it will already begin to appear differently to us, because we move our eyes or notice something new in what we see. Like before, the new image and its predecessor circulate immediately. Yet the even older image has not gone away; it too re-imposes itself on the present perception, but in a somewhat less vivid way. Nonetheless, this enriches the object with another layer in its appearance.



With each additional moment, another new inner circuit pushes-out the former ones.
So we see, then, that the past and present are perpetually crystallized together. “In truth,” writes Bergson, “every perception is already memory. Practically we perceive only the past, the pure present being the invisible progress of the past gnawing into the future.”



Yet even though all of our past is always interposed in the present in an implicit way, sometimes what we see causes one recollection to stand-out more explicitly among the rest. Often we observe something in our daily life that causes certain prior memories to flare-out before our “mind’s eye.” And sometimes our flashbacks can be so vivid that they drown-out the actual things we see. We then begin to feel as though we are reliving that past experience.

Deleuze illustrates these recollection-circuits with the cinematic flashbacks in Marcel Carné’s movie The Daybreak (Le jour se lève).

The film follows events happening from sundown to dawn. During this short period, a murderer flashes back into his past. Whenever we return to the present, we hear a heavy doom-filled bass and drum beat. It gives us the feeling we are moving inevitably toward a fatal end. So during the flashbacks, the past is so vibrant that it completely covers-over the actual present things standing before him in his room. As viewers, we only see what he is remembering, and not the events still carrying-on in the present while he dreams. But because upon returning we hear that fatal march toward the end, we are reminded that even while reminiscing, we never escaped the current doomed situation.






Now consider if we were to memorize a series of spoken lines for a play. Each time we practice it, we create a new individual memory. When it comes time to perform, we just start with the first word, and the rest seem to follow automatically, without our needing to recall any single rehearsal. All the previous times were contracted into that present moment of automatic habitual bodily performance. But after the show, someone might ask us about how we memorized the lines. Then we could relax and daydream about those moments, seeing them in their vivid detail.

Bergson illustrates this with his famous cone diagram. As new things enter our memory, they add to a cone.




If we are acting automatically, like when performing something we rehearsed, then we are down closer to the S point.

Being near this tip does not mean our memories have gone away. Rather, they are all contracted into our physical actions, like how a performance expresses physically all our memories of past recitals. When instead we daydream about the past, the images expand-out in our minds, as during a flashback. In these moments, we reside at a higher layer of the cone. Always we are varying somewhere between automatic action and dreamful reflection, so we might be at any of the many possible layers of expansion or contraction of our memory.

So during flashback scenes, the character’s memory leaps-up to a higher level. But during an action scene where he acts automatically, his memory is contracted into the present moment, down at the cone’s tip. We are always changing level, varying ‘melodically’ between our intense physical engagement in the present moment and our drifting somewhere in dream-land.

So the larger circuits are more distant memories, and the higher cone levels are increased degrees of expansion on one part of those memories.

The cone levels and the circuits are not equivalent, but we might place them in correspondence by noting that when moving to a distant circuit, we are also expanding our memories. In these slides we might correlate the movement-into-flashback with the expansions in the diagrams.

What we notice are the simultaneity of the layers. At any one moment, our consciousness is expressing, implicitly or explicitly, all our past actions and memories. We do not need time to flow in order for it to fully present itself in its immediacy. When the hero sees a memento and flashes back to an event taking place a couple months prior, he does not feel two months of time in their continuous passage. Instead, he experiences two months time in a sudden flash. So the simultaneity of the distant past with the active present becomes immediately evident to him. It is not an extent of time that he undergoes in this flash, but rather time in the form of an intensity.

To further illustrate, Deleuze discusses flashback movies made by Joseph Mankiewicz. In these films, flashbacks are the product of bifurcations. There are two dimensions to these bifurcations or forkings. The first sort we will consider is the forking as a break in a linear progress, as described by Prigogine and Stengers.

They describe how for certain chemical reactions, changes in one variable can be correlated to the variations of others, but then one variable will reach a point when its path is indeterminable. It could increase or decrease, but this outcome is always left to chance.



The other sort of bifurcation we find in Borges’ story ‘The Garden of Forking Paths.’ It describes a Chinese monk’s unfinished manuscripts for a novel with this same title. It went unpublished because it was incomprehensible. The chapters did not proceed just sequentially. A following chapter would be like an alternate version of the same prior one.

The Garden, then, forks-not through space but rather through time. Characters in stories normally must choose between diverging paths. In the Garden, however, the character, “chooses— simultaneously—all of them. He creates, in this way, diverse futures, diverse times which themselves also proliferate and fork.”

There is one remarkable scene in Mankiewicz’ Barefoot Contessa, which showcases both senses of bifurcation. The soon-to-be Contessa quite abruptly switches companions, taking her down a drastically different path. But this scene was remembered by two different people, each in their own way and with their own slight variations. We will place both scenes side-by-side, listening just to the audio from one.



We notice that sudden instant of the slap, that crack in the flow of time, when the next moment is completely undetermined, entirely discontinuous with the present, that moment which is truly phenomenal, that pure, intense, dramatic moment outside the flow of time.

Now, the Contessa’s forking is the reason each of these people recalled the event. We see the relation between bifurcation and flashback shown even more vividly in Mankiewicz’ A Letter to Three Wives. In this story, a woman writes a letter to three wives saying she ran off with one of their husbands, but she does not specify which one. This is a forking in their lives, and it causes them to recall prior forkings in the past that foreshadowed the current situation. In one wife’s recollection, we see her discover a possible reason her husband might have left with the other woman. Her face makes a certain expression that is almost identical with her current one, as if in her past she was already flashing forward to the future. And likewise, events in the present unfold where she gets news that seems to confirm her suspicions, and she makes that same facial expression again, linking all three moments together.





So when something happens in our lives that takes us down a diverging unexpected path, we on the one hand might flash back to another forking in the past that only implicitly hinted at the current bifurcation; yet on the other hand, we are already living the present moment as a memory given in advance of its future recollection, only we don’t know yet what future forkings will bring out the present moment’s implicit significance. In the instant of the flashback, past, present, and future are all simultaneous and immediate to our consciousness, as if we are always in a way standing outside of time’s flow and experiencing events from the perspective of eternity.



We noted at the beginning how phenomenology requires time to pass in order for phenomena to appear. This in a way gives the present moment a sort of thickness. It swells out from the present, fading into the past like a comet tail, as Husserl puts it.

And we are only able to constitute a phenomenal object by means of associative similarities that present themselves and synthesize across a span of flowing time. But for Deleuze, we need not think that appearances show themselves through time in its flowing. The phenomenon of motion, for example, might just be the diminishing vibrancy of layers of after images all showing in one instant of perception.

If ever we feel time, we feel it as a difference or a gap, like when peering in the mirror and seeing someone who looks older than we thought we were. Abruptly-noticed signs of age make us feel the depth of many years all in that sudden instant when they flash before us. Instead of an extensive thickness of time, we might think of an intensive depth of time. Each moment in our lives has the depth of all time, here and now immediately. A Deleuzean phenomenological time need not flow, and perhaps should not flow. If the flow is based on associating similarities bridging one moment to the next, then more flow would mean less difference from moment to moment, and thus less standing out, less appearing, less phenomenality.
