1.2 Gender of Nouns




German nouns are either:
masculine,
feminine,
or neuter.

Examples:
MASCULINE:.......der Student,


der Mann,


der Tisch (table)



FEMININE:..........die Universität,


die Biologie,

die Frau (woman)


FEMININE:..........das Haus,


das Bett,


das Kind (child)



Masculine nouns denote male beings

der Vater
father


der Stier
bull


der Lehrer
teacher


der Arzt
physician



Feminine nouns often do either of the following

a. denote female beings:

die Mutter
mother


die Tante
aunt


die Henne
Hen


die Kuh
cow



b. Nouns that end in ei, ie, heit, keit, ik schaft, tät, ion, ung, in:

die Krankheit
sickness


die Universität
university


die Theorie
theory


NEUTER: Nouns that end in -chen, -lein (which are dimunitive endings) are neuter:

die Röhre - das Röhrchen
tube - small tube

die Frau - das Fräulein
woman - miss

der Mann - das Männchen
man - little man

der Teil - das Teilchen
part - particle
