Benson Mates
Stoic Logic
Chapter I: Introduction
§0 "Summary"
Mates will "present a true description of the logic of the Old Stoa." (1) Besides repeating Lukasiewicz's theories, Mates will
1) describe the Stoic semantical theory and compare it with certain similar modern theories,
2) attempt to give a better account of the often misunderstood Diodorean implication,
3) point-out the Stoic version of the conditionalization principle, and
4) discuss the contention of the Stoics that their propositional logic was complete.
The primary Stoic logic texts have been lost. Most of what we discuss is derived through second-hand accounts, sometimes "transmitted by unsympathetic hands." (1c)
