1.1.1 Introduction

 

There are 8 grammatical word classes or 'parts of speech' (9 including interjections):

1) Nouns

2) Verbs

3) Determiners

4) Qualifying adjectives

5) Adverbs

6) Pronouns

7) Prepositions

8) Conjunctions

9) Interjections.

We use 3 criteria to define a speech-part:

1) semantic,

2) morphological, and

3) syntactic.
